Light House Studio equips young people with the skills and confidence to tell their stories and build community through filmmaking. Located on Charlottesville’s bustling downtown mall in the historic Vinegar Hill Theatre, our staff is making a big difference for young people in our city. Light House Studio also owns and operates the historic Vinegar Hill Theatre (VHT) located on Charlottesville’s downtown mall. While LH’s education programs are focused on serving youth ages 8-18, our VHT Community Programs serve people of all ages and backgrounds. In 2023, LH welcomed 3,169 attendees across 50 VHT screening, rentals, and Summer Film Academy (SFA) screenings.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting to the Program Director, the Teaching Specialist will assist with teaching workshops at Light House Studio and in the community for our partner programs. They will work on various film projects and assist or lead the coordination, filming, and editing process. They will also help manage projection, tech, and/or Front of House needs for Vinegar Hill Theatre screenings and events.

Job Duties

RESPONSIBILITIES

Programs
Curriculum & Content: Work with the Executive Director, Program Director, Creative Director, and Education Director to develop and enhance programs/workshops offered at Light House; assist with coordinating partnership and community programs; assist or lead the filming and editing process for assigned projects
Teaching Artist: Serve as a Teaching Artist for Light House original workshops and partnership collaborations; oversee students in the storytelling, production, and post-production process; ensure students rotate roles throughout production; place emphasis on collective decision-making among students
Production Work: Work on various film projects and assist or lead the coordination, filming, and editing process
Equipment Maintenance: Ensure equipment is maintained and repaired as needed; assist with equipment preparation prior to workshops

Projection and Tech – Manage Projection and Tech for Vinegar Hill Theatre screenings and events; projection and tech responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
– Pre-Event: Obtain and test media file(s) including sound levels and video playback; confirm equipment is set up for discussion and/or Q&A, if
applicable
– Day-Of Coordination: Ensure equipment and media file are functioning properly in advance of the screening/event; managing screening and
technical equipment during event
-Post-Event: Provide a post event summary to the Education Director and confirm follow up items, if needed
Front of House – Serve as backup for managing Front of House (FOH) for Vinegar Hill Theatre screenings and events

Skills Required

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

-3-5 years’ professional experience in video/film production, including specialization in one or more of the following (documentary, animation, or narrative filmmaking)
-Holds a relevant Bachelor of Fine Arts or Master of Fine Arts degree (film/video or related field)
-Teaching experience is preferred
-Experienced operator of consumer, prosumer, and professional sound, video, and lighting equipment
-Proficiency with industry standard software including FCPX and Premiere (After Effects preferred)
-Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
-Strong organizational skills & ability to work on multiple, diverse projects to meet deadlines
-Ability to work independently and without close or constant supervision

Additional Info

Light House employees are given ten (10) working days to be used for PTO and five (5) working days to be used for sick days. Full-time employees are eligible to enroll in group medical insurance. Full-time and Part-time applications will be considered. Salary range is $42,000-$48,000/per year to commensurate with experience.
