The Charlottesville Fire Department is seeking candidates to join our team who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville’s Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence. Firefighters perform responsible service work in fire suppression and prevention; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a company and/or shift commander. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.

Typical starting pay is $15.00 an hour ($43,680 annually) for a 56-hour workweek with additional pay given for EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic certification and experience. (After becoming a released provider Paramedic, career development pay will bring compensation to $54,600; Intermediate career development pay will bring compensation to $52,416 annually). During training, new recruits will be on a 40-hour per week schedule at $21.00 an hour. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position.       • This also includes information about the recruitment process, physical agility exam, and other pertinent information.
      • Once receipt of a completed Personal History Questionnaire has been received, candidates will be sent information about the next steps in the process.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency required;
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia by employment start date. (To view our driving eligibility requirements, visit www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166);
  • Must agree to and sign a “no tobacco/smoking’ contract;
  • After one year of service Virginia Firefighter II and Virginia Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Required.

Preferred Qualifications (applicants with these qualifications will be given preference during initial evaluation):

  • National Registry Paramedics or Commonwealth of Virginia certified; EMT-Intermediates (Commonwealth of Virginia)
  • Certified firefighter currently working full-time in any state (IFSAC or Pro Board certified)
  • Military veterans (paramedics eligible for reciprocity within the Commonwealth)
