Description

Executive Director
Rockville, MD

The American College of Dentists (ACD) is a forward-looking organization with the strength of more than a century of history and hard work giving the organization the credibility and professional capital necessary to get things done.

Since its inception, the ACD has done much to define, redefine and shape the future of the dental profession. Fellowship in the College is not a transactional relationship. It provides a means of pooling talent, skills, commitment and resources to belong to the higher purpose and calling established by the Founders more than 100 years ago. Although rooted in history, the College is committed to moving forward and its current projects are reflective of that commitment. Through strategic planning, increased support for local leaders, creating a multi-disciplinary Ethics Summit on medical-dental integration, updating its Ethics Handbook to be more contemporary and relevant, and increasing its scholarship and educational offerings, the ACD will continue to be a preeminent leader in oral healthcare.

The Board is looking for their new ED to build upon a strong reputational foundation and grow the organization. That desired growth will result from deeper engagement with stakeholders and Fellows, expanding ethics and leadership opportunities for the Fellows and others in the profession, attracting the next generation of dentists, educational opportunities, as well as programmatic offerings that promote long-term value. The Board is excited to partner with their new ED to build upon its recent strategic planning efforts and to identify and implement strategic initiatives.

The ACD is governed by a 20-member Board of Regents and the Foundation has a 5-member Board of Directors. Both Boards are comprised of highly dedicated volunteers. The Executive Director oversees a staff of two full-time employees and four part-time employees and an operating budget of approximately $1.3 million.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Regents of the ACD (the College) and works in close collaboration with the ACD Foundation. The ED has the overall strategic and operational responsibility for the staff, programs and expansion of the organization, including the execution of the mission of both entities. The ED will be required to develop a deep knowledge of the College, its core programs, operations and strategic plans.

We seek a proven executive-level leader whose career in a similar-size or larger member-based organization has demonstrated an ability to chart a path forward, who has exceptional communication skills (written and oral) and who has a servant leadership style.  This person must exhibit success in collaborating with and convening diverse stakeholders sharing common interests and values so that the aspirations and goals of the organization are pursued in a collegial, transparent and highly participatory manner.  Direct experience in organized dentistry is not required, although general knowledge of dentistry or healthcare would be highly advantageous. A demonstrated passion for the mission of the College is a must.

Career experience and knowledge of oral health delivery, public health issues and health systems will be highly valued but is not a prerequisite. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field relevant to nonprofit, association management, or business is required. A master’s degree is preferred.  Demonstration of continuing professional education, accreditation in a professional field and board leadership in a state or national nonprofit, professional or trade association is highly valued. A CAE designation is highly desirable.

The salary range for this position is between $180,000 and $200,000 and will be commensurate with experience. ACD offers a comprehensive benefits package, including but not limited to paid holidays, vacation, group health, vision and dental plus a generous retirement plan contribution of 10% upon eligibility.
