Description

The Haven, a multi-resource organization that provides a low-barrier day shelter and connections to local housing assistance opportunities, in Charlottesville, VA. seeks a new Executive Director.

The Haven offers a safe and welcoming space for people experiencing homelessness or extreme poverty and supports individuals and families as they pursue stability through referrals to regional programs and creative housing interventions.

Under a HUD-designated Continuum of Care program, The Haven manages coordinated entry, rapid rehousing, and homelessness prevention with funding from federal, state, and local agencies, as well as philanthropic supporters. The Haven practices radical hospitality, valuing and learning from the contributions of guests, and opening the doors wide for any and everyone, no matter their circumstances.

The Executive Director will champion The Haven’s mission and values and, along with the Board of Directors, will provide strategic leadership for the organization’s core priority areas. The Executive Director leads a team of senior staff who are responsible for The Haven’s programs, partnerships, outreach, community presence, finances, as well as execution of its mission. Accordingly, The Haven is seeking someone with a strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, fundraising, and grant management, as well as experience in leading, managing, and evaluating a team.

The Haven has a $2 million operating budget and employs twelve full-time and thirteen part-time employees.

Skills Required

The Haven seeks applicants who can demonstrate that they are:

  • A nonprofit leader, with a talent in motivating, guiding, and managing professional staff and volunteers while effectively administering a resource-constrained organization
  • An advocate for vulnerable populations, well-versed in Trauma-Informed Care and Harm Reduction principles, with experience working, researching, developing, and/or implementing policy around homelessness, housing instability or extreme poverty
  • A clear and compelling speaker and writer, who communicates effectively with guests, staff, government officials, funders, and the community
  • An outstanding collaborator who builds coalitions and partnerships to develop and implement solutions to tough, long-standing issues
  • A strategic thinker, who is able to envision, craft, and execute long-term plans
  • An individual who believes in the dignity of all people and is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice

The Executive Director must be culturally sensitive and have the highest ethical standards, demonstrating honesty and integrity and leading by example. The Haven’s new Executive Director should be passionate, compassionate, empathetic, and creative.  Patience, resilience, and a good sense of humor are appreciated.

People with lived experience related to homelessness and extreme poverty, and those from groups traditionally underrepresented in leadership are particularly encouraged to apply.
