About Us:
The mission of the Tribe is to preserve Rappahannock culture, social structures, and political structures while educating the public on the rich contributions that Rappahannocks have made and continue to make to Virginia and the Nation. The Department of Environmental Services represents Rappahannock Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge in regional, state, and federal forums.

Overview:
The Rappahannock Tribe is seeking a qualified Director of Environmental Services to join their team based in Indian Neck, VA. This is a full-time position reporting to the Rappahannock Tribe Chief and performs a variety of administrative, technical, and planning work to identify and achieve Tribal goals regarding natural resource conservation and environmental advocacy.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Develops short and long-term Tribal goals for environmental conservation and advocacy; gathers information and prepares studies, reports, and recommendations to achieve these goals.
• Prepares and maintains information regarding Indigenous knowledge of natural resources; responds to requests for Tribal input on related subjects.
• Coordinates with local, state, and federal conservation offices/agencies, and non-governmental organizations; develops projects with Tribal partners.
• Provides information to Tribal Council and members, as well as local boards, commissions, civic groups, businesses, individuals, and the general public, on environmental issues.
• Provides reports to evaluate the effectiveness of the Department of Environmental Services.
• Fosters beneficial relationships with other Tribes in order to promote a cohesive presentation of Indigenous knowledge, concerns, and goals.
• Provides training and education for Tribal members in natural resource conservation and environmental advocacy.
• Works with the Tribe’s grant writer to prepare grant proposals, applications, contracts, and other documents required for departmental services. Submits grant reports as required.
• Supervises Department of Environmental Services staff.
• Completes other duties assigned by the Chief of the Tribe.

Job Duties

Working Conditions:
• This position requires adaptability in working indoors in an office setting, as well as frequent outdoor work. Includes conservation project sites, conference and training facilities, and individual meetings with partner agencies and organizations. May require some evenings or weekend work.

Physical Requirements:
• This is generally not physically demanding, but on a periodic basis may require standing for extended periods of time, lifting objects under 50 lbs., and working outdoors in inclement weather.

Skills Required

Job Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience in natural resource conservation and environmental advocacy, including administrative responsibility
• Graduation from a four-year college or university, preferably with specialization in environmental science; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal conservation programs and processes.
• Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships with government agencies and non-governmental organizations.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups and individuals, including members of the public, educators, government officials, and scientists.
• Ability to learn and understand the culture of the Rappahannock Tribe in order to coordinate Indigenous knowledge and experience with science-based best management practices.
• Ability to prepare and analyze reports and data.
• Skilled in the operation of necessary tools and equipment, i.e. computers, word processing, spreadsheet software, online webinar and meeting software.
