Description

This is one of two lead program positions for Madison House. Madison House serves as the independent volunteer center for University of Virginia students. The Director of Community Engagement will partner closely with the Director of Programs and other Madison House staff. Together they will work with our student leaders to build mutually beneficial partnerships to address community needs, and further the educational objectives of our students. Madison House is a fifty-year-old 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with deep roots both in the community and at the University. Led by a team of 7 full-time professionals and 300 student leaders, more than 3000 students volunteer a total of 100,000+ hours each year with more than 175 community partners in Central Virginia. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Job Duties

Responsibilities include (among others):

Community Engagement —

  • Promote curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular community engagement initiatives for University of Virginia students
  • Collaborate across the University and develop partnerships with faculty to integrate community engagement into academic courses and programs
  • Meet with community partners to gauge the need for community engagement projects/programs
  • Facilitate the assessment of programs, services, and outcomes

Student Leadership & Program Development —

  • Hire, train, develop, and manage a graduate student assistant
  • Co-coordinate all student leadership summits, retreats, trainings, and dinners
  • Analyze and create assessment reports; administer and review fall and spring volunteer surveys
  • Serve on the Programs Committee of the Madison House Board of Directors
  • Prepare a staff report covering program and community partner issues for meetings of the Board of Directors
  • Track and share volunteer data for use by Madison House’s development and communications teams
  • Co-coordinate the biweekly program planning meeting talking points, announcements, and training materials for dissemination to all student head program directors and staff
  • Co-develop master calendar of training events, meetings, and reporting requirements for student program directors
  • Advise specific programs as assigned

Programs (working in partnership with the Director of Programs)—

  • Meet biweekly with student head program directors, to review and develop program planning meeting agendas, to keep abreast of program issues, and provide guidance and supervision
  • Provide guidance, advising, and counsel to student program directors, individually and in group meetings as needed
  • Mediate concerns and issues between volunteers, student program directors, and/or community partners as needed
  • Monitor student program director compliance with record keeping and job descriptions
  • Provide counseling and feedback to student program directors who are not in compliance with their job description and duties
  • Develop and design record-keeping forms related to student program directors
  • Oversee the program director selection process including development of policies and procedures
  • Provide feedback to head program directors on their style of leadership through observation during program advisory meetings
  • Assume responsibility for monitoring financial budgets of student-led programs
  • Conduct evaluations of student leaders and staff; follow up with each head program director about every individual program director (plans for improvement, encouragement where it is due, goals for next semester)
  • Oversee the administration, collection, and review of student leader agreements

Development of Community Partnerships —

  • Co-coordinate the community partner development process
  • Provide guidance and support to students and community agencies interested in developing a Madison House volunteer placement site
  • Evaluate potential partner agencies and make recommendations to Executive Director on whether the agency should become a new Madison House community partner site
  • Maintain knowledge of volunteer activities at community partner agencies
  • Maintain positive working relationships with community partner agencies
  • Conduct site visits of community partner agencies as requested and as needed
  • Coordinate annual community partner engagement and recognition opportunities
  • Provide program specific training to community partners as needed
  • Co-coordinate an annual community partnership feedback process, and assess the viability of a continued partnership
  • Maintain Madison House community partner database
  • Maintain listing of referral site agencies
  • Maintain knowledge of community resources and needs
  • Represent Madison House on interagency committees and task forces

Other —
– Assist the Executive Director with any other tasks as assigned in furtherance of the Madison House mission

Skills/Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Professional attitude and appearance
  • Strong attention to detail, and excellent project management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work independently

Skills/Qualifications Preferred:

  • Advanced degree in higher education, student affairs, college student development, counseling, or a related field
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in community service, volunteer management, leadership development, student affairs, or non-profit management
  • Experience supervising and/or working with college students
