Description

Currently Trinity has one Sunday service, which starts at 10:30 a.m. and finishes by no later than noon. The worship music at Trinity is diverse but draws chiefly from two hymnals, “The Hymnal 1982” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing II”; these are supplemented by music from other sources and hymnals. The primary instrument at Trinity is a Yamaha trans acoustic (hybrid) piano. Drums, handbells and other instruments are used often.

Job Duties

The minister of music reports to the Rector (church pastor). Duties include the following:

  1. Choose music for Sunday worship in consultation with the Rector and with sensitivity to the Episcopal Church’s liturgical calendar.
  2. Provide musical accompaniment for hymns and music during Sunday worship, and prepare a prelude, postlude, and music for Holy Communion.
  3. Oversee preparation of the choir/ensemble/soloist as musical leaders of worship; select and rehearse a weekly offertory to be sung during worship.
  4. Be available for additional (non-Sunday) services during the Christmas and Easter seasons, especially those during Holy Week; and for other special services and occasions, such as the annual visit of a bishop.
  5. Arrange for supply (replacement) musicians when on vacation or otherwise absent.
  6. Schedule and oversee instrumentalists and vocalists for the summer months, when the choir is on sabbatical.
  7. Participate in Charlottesville-area ecumenical gatherings, such as the annual Martin Luther King Jr. community worship service.

Skills Required

The successful candidate will have a broad musical background.  Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with both African-American sacred music and the Episcopal-Anglican hymnody.
