Description

The New City Arts team is growing! We are seeking a full-time Welcome Gallery Manager to join New City Arts, working with the Executive Director and Communications/Community Programs Manager.

New City Arts is a community arts non-profit that facilities a robust portfolio of arts and community programs in Charlottesville, VA. Our core programming includes New City Arts’ Welcome Gallery centrally located on Charlottesville’s downtown mall; classes, workshops, and artwork exchanges; an artist residency; a creative placemaking initiative with The Haven (a day shelter and housing organization); and micro-grant programs to support local artists. We support approximately 60 artists and 6,000 audience members annually. We are committed to cultivating new audiences for the arts, supporting the careers of local artists, and supporting creative placemaking in Charlottesville. Run by an ecumenical board, we sit at the intersection of a diverse community, we facilitate dynamic partnerships, and we often work with local congregations to further our mission.

We are seeking a full-time Welcome Gallery Manager to join New City Arts. We want someone to join our team who believes in our mission and loves working with other creative people. The successful candidate will be a team player who is excited to work in a creative environment. Welcome Gallery is located adjacent to the New City Arts office and studio space. The Welcome Gallery Manager is responsible for all programming that happens in the building, including gallery and studio programming.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement dynamic, inclusive programming at Welcome Gallery.
  • Oversee selection processes, open calls, and selection committees for gallery and studio programs including monthly exhibitions, a residency, and artist-led programs at Welcome Gallery.
  • Facilitate artist-led programming that amplifies underrepresented identities, experiences, and cultures, and connects diverse audiences to Charlottesville’s legacy and future.
  • Manage Welcome Gallery and studio programming from beginning to end. This includes maintaining artist contracts; overseeing exhibition changeover, installation, and maintenance; running gallery receptions and events; handling art sales and commissions; and ensuring that staff are knowledgeable about and have necessary materials to promote exhibitions, gallery-based programming, and the residency.
  • Grow and deepen relationships with local artists. Regularly communicate with artists, listening and responding to their professional needs and goals and allowing their feedback to inform gallery programming.
  • Lead small-scale programs that support exhibitions and community engagement including New City Arts & Crafts, gallery lunches, an annual artist exchange, workshops, artist talks, etc.
  • Strengthen and oversee New City Arts’ internship program, which provides paid internships for college students interested in studio art and arts administration.
  • Manage individual program budgets and program evaluation.
  • Provide ideas, input, and feedback on programs, process, and day-to-day operations.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager to plan program and event promotion and provide all necessary information to ensure smooth communication and marketing for your programs.
  • Work with the New City Arts team to maintain day-to-day operations in the office, Welcome Gallery, and New City Arts Studio.
  • Experience working with artists, as an artist, and/or in a non-profit organization is a plus but not required.

You are:

  • Organized and able to prioritize responsibilities when there’s a lot on your plate.
  • Committed to centering artists’ voices by listening to them, supporting them, and paying them for their work.
  • Great at managing your own schedule, responding to emails in a timely manner, and taking the initiative to problem solve effectively.
  • Someone who can work with technologies like Zoom, Google Docs, etc.
  • Committed to racial equity within the organization and artistic programming.
  • A team player who loves to brainstorm new ideas and create a supportive working environment for your co-workers.
  • Someone with event experience who can meet deadlines and work collaboratively with others.
  • Not opposed to working in an open office environment with regular gallery visitors.
  • Able to work irregular hours (the first Friday evening of every month and occasional evening or weekends) as needed.
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (required for all New City Arts staff).
