Description

Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge (WCBR) is seeking a Vice President of Development to fill an influential role that furthers the charitable purposes of the WCBR Foundation, a subsidiary 501(c)(3) corporation organized in 1998 to benefit and support the charitable purposes of WCBR.  WCBR operates a lifecare community for persons 62 and older and serves approximately 450 residents on a 56-acre campus that includes independent living apartments and cottages, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing care.

Responsibilities

  • Development Strategy – Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising program to augment and amplify overall philanthropic support by appealing to increasingly sophisticated donors. The program will be two-pronged:  fundraising for unrestricted gifts to maximize flexibility as well as fundraising for well-defined priorities.
  • Board, Volunteer and Donor Relations – Build and maintain strong relationships and communications with Foundation trustees, residents, donors, ambassadors and volunteers.  Attend board and committee meetings, prepare reports, presentations and, in collaboration with the CEO, draft agendas.
  • Communications –Prepare content and information for a variety of audiences and media to increase awareness and support of the organization’s philanthropic programs and development activities. Ensure the timely production of an annual report and other fundraising and development collateral and communications.
  • Finance and Data Operations – Provide expertise in forecasting and achieving philanthropic targets, projecting program expenditures, preparing and managing a departmental budget and effectively presenting and representing information.  Maintain accurate donor files and fundraising database. Oversee gift acknowledgment and processing.
  • Leadership and Staff Administration – Serve as a member of the executive leadership team and provide consultative and collaborative support to departmental leaders to enhance philanthropic opportunities.  Ensure seamless integration and compliance of development activities with other functional areas in the organization (i.e. operations, administration, finance, etc.)  Fulfill supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and procedures.

Qualifications

    • Collaboration/Teamwork – Demonstrated record of high accomplishment in both building institutional capacity in philanthropy and leading annual and major gift fundraising efforts
    • Communication – Superb communication skills (both written and oral) that demonstrate passion for the mission and inspire others.  Intellectual capacity and stature, combined with authentic approachability to build alliances with various constituencies. A sincere and compelling messenger of institutional priorities and strengths that will inspire ongoing philanthropy.
    • Leadership – Proven ability to lead and inspire high-performing individuals and teams, with a vision for expanding fundraising capacity and strengthening performance while preserving cultural attributes.  Innovative as needed.  Able to manage, train, coach and motivate staff to higher performance levels.  Demonstrates judgment, tact, and discretion in handling sensitive information, with unwavering integrity, and proven ability to maintain utmost confidentiality.

Requirements

    • Required:  Bachelor’s Degree
    • Preferred:  Advanced or Master’s Degree, Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification
    • Required:  5 – 10 years of progressive experience in philanthropic development, preferably with experience in a health care, wellness, aging services and/or senior living.
    • Preferred: 3-5 years of managing a variety of communications targeted to both donors and audiences at various levels.
