Description

he Virginia Film Festival (VAFF) and Virginia Theatre Festival (VTF) seek a full-time Marketing & Communications Manager.

The position will report to the VAFF Managing Director and help shape and execute the communications and marketing strategy for both festivals. The position will also help conceptualize, pitch, and create promotional content across social media, e-newsletters, and websites as well as lead advertising, targeted marketing, and PR campaigns. They will work closely with leadership to maximize marketing and communications in support of strengthening relationships with sponsors and partners as well as strengthening DEI and community outreach initiatives.

Now in its 36 year, the Virginia Film Festival is widely recognized as one of the leading regional film festivals in America and is known for its commitment to taking audiences beyond the screen to explore some of the most important issues of our time. The annual five-day festival is held each Fall and showcases more than 100 films and 60 guest artists in venues across Charlottesville and UVA.

As UVA’s professional summer theatre for over 45 years, the Virginia Theatre Festival presents an annual summer festival of musicals, classic works, and new plays for our local Charlottesville, Albemarle, and UVA communities.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to: 

  • Work with leadership to create a mission-driven, creative, welcoming, and consistent brand strategy across all marketing and communications streams.
  • Create and curate content across a variety of platforms to increase engagement, attendance, and brand recognition.
  • Work with staff to connect marketing and communications strategy to support sponsorships, partnerships, community outreach, and DEI efforts.
  • Works to forge and maintain strong relationships with partners across UVA and with Charlottesville-area constituency groups, individuals, and businesses.
  • Oversee local and non-local advertising placements and media partnerships (TV, print, digital, radio).
  • Lead creation and submission of ads, including copywriting, storyboarding, coordinating with graphic design team, etc.
  • Manage social media and email marketing content and calendar.
  • Help write, edit, and distribute press releases and media alerts.
  • Assist in organizing and scheduling press conferences, live remotes, and interviews.
  • Support media relations, credentials, and other PR needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate, and user-friendly websites and web presence.
  • Support the production of the lobby displays, digital signs, pre-event video content, and more.
  • Oversee patron communications and audience surveys.
  • Research, write, and proof copy for event blurbs, artist bios, and other promotional copy.
  • Represent festivals at events, fairs, and other promotional opportunities.
  • Monitor ticket sales, attendance, and survey data and produce post-season impact reports.
  • Supervise seasonal staff and interns.

Skills Required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience: At least three years of experience.
  • Strong skills regarding social media and email marketing; an eye for good design and aesthetics is a plus.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, time management, communications, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to solve problems and manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends for events are also required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A self-starter with a positive attitude and excellent work ethic.
  • Prior experience in DEI and community engagement.
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and other creative applications.
  • Proficient knowledge of Outlook, Excel, shared calendaring, and other collaborative applications.
  • A working knowledge of UVA and local communities and the overall arts and cultural scene.
  • Ability to work independently or within a team environment.
  • A passion for the arts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Work Schedule

The anticipated start date is August 2023. This position is In-Person located in Charlottesville, VA.
