Position may be filled as a Traffic Inspector or Traffic Inspector In-Training based on minimum qualifications.
The preferred hiring range is between $17.01 and $21.25 an hour ($35,380.80 – $44,200.00 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a non-exempt Full-Time position. - The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS; however, the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. This position helps to assure quality work from contractors working on City streets or within the City’s right-of-way including traffic operations. Performs responsible technical work inspecting street maintenance and construction work performed by private contractors for specification compliance to local and state requirements. Does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is performed independently, with diverse functional areas and more specialization and ability to consult on the work of others. Reports to the Traffic Engineer.
If hired at the in-training level, the incumbent will be provided a training plan with measurable competencies that has been developed for the position. The in-training period will be 24-months but may be accelerated with a minimum of at least one year. Once the training competencies have been satisfactorily achieved and designated timeframes have passed, including meeting the minimum criteria of the Traffic Maintenance Inspector, the incumbent will be placed in and assume the duties of the Traffic Maintenance Inspector.
Minimum Qualifications for Traffic Inspector In-Training:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One (1) year of experience relevant to this position including; street or traffic maintenance, construction or inspections, or permit technician preferred.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or qualified and able to obtain a valid VA driver’s license prior to beginning the position. (To view our driving eligibility requirements, visit https://www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166);
- Requires possession the following licenses/certifications OR ability to obtain in the first 12 months of employment:
- Intermediate Traffic Control
- OSHA 10-hour Construction
- Required to take applicable coursework, as designated by the City Traffic Engineer.
Minimum Qualifications for Traffic Inspector:
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of two years of experience in street or traffic maintenance OR any combination of education and experience which would confer equivalent knowledge and ability shall be deemed to satisfy this requirement.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of valid Driver’s License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia required.
- Requires possession the following licenses/certifications (or ability to obtain in the first 12 months of employment):
- Intermediate Traffic Control
- OSHA 10-hour Construction
- Required to take, or have already taken, applicable coursework as designated by the City Traffic Engineer.
