The Stewardship and Volunteer Program Assistant (SVPA) assists with land management operations, including prescribed fire, and coordinates & supervises volunteers throughout Virginia over a 1-year period. This position advances our work in improving private and public lands, increases opportunities for volunteering and connects the Conservancy with untapped communities.
Job Duties
The Stewardship and Volunteer Program Assistant (SVPA) works with staff and volunteers to maintain public access infrastructure such as trails, kiosks, boardwalks, and interpretive materials. The SVPA assists with stewardship tasks such as boundary posting, removal of non-native invasive plants and legal compliance monitoring in accordance with Land Trust Alliance standards. The SVPA will participate in fire management activities, including assisting with prescribed burns, preparing fire lines, and post-burn monitoring. The SVPA coordinates and supervises large-scale volunteer events such as watershed clean-ups, invasive species management and species monitoring. They will help operate the Preserve Volunteer Program by recruiting, training, and corresponding with volunteer stewards. They also assist with development of community engagement projects, coordinate with partner organizations, and may process forms and prepare reports regarding the volunteer program. In general, the position is split 40% outdoor stewardship and 60% volunteer program assistance.
-Organize and lead volunteer workdays and events with minimal supervision.
-Work with TNC Virginia staff in other programs and regions to accomplish conservation goals with the help of volunteers.
-Perform considerable physical work in variable weather conditions, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
-Travel to and work in remote environments with occasional overnight stays.
–Work some evenings and weekends, as needed.
Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential -information.
-Utilize financial responsibility when purchasing with corporate credit card and reporting expenses.
Skills Required
Minimum Qualifications
-High school diploma or GED and 6 month’s experience working outdoors and with people (e.g.: land management, landscaping, camp counselor, or similar experience).
-Experience with, or willingness to learn to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
-Ability to pass Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level (3 mile walk with 45-pound pack in under 45 minutes).
-Experience working in a team environment.
-Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
-Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
-Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
-Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
-Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
-1 – 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.
-1 years’ experience organizing and managing volunteers.
-Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualifications, including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130) and Introduction to National Incident Management System (ICS-700)
-Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems, including plant identification.
Work Schedule
Hours may vary due to events or field work. The work week is typically Monday – Friday 9:00 – 5:00.
