Staff Accountant 

The Trace is an award-winning, nonprofit media organization that’s building the only team of journalists in America reporting exclusively on the issue of gun violence. As we enter a period of critical growth, we are looking for a meticulous bookkeeper, incisive financial analyst, and all-around numbers wiz to join our Charlottesville, Virginia-based business and strategy office as a Staff Accountant. In this position, you’ll support The Trace’s Managing Director and collaborate with our newsroom operations coordinator, outside controller, auditors, and tax preparers on many of the financial and budgeting matters core to the sustainability of our mission-driven business. 

Job Duties

As The Trace's new staff accountant, your responsibilities will include:  Bookkeeping: record invoices, payments, and expenses; log donations, grants, and other revenues; prepare weekly cash balance updates; conduct monthly close  Cash and corporate credit card management: monitor daily bank activities; prepare checks and wire transfers; collect and collate receipts and complete monthly reconciliations; respond to any alerts Budgeting and audits: calculate revenue and cost projections; liaison with audit firm and review annual audit results; provide financial research and ad hoc analysis for restricted grants and general operations  Tax preparation: Support controller and tax prep firm as needed  Grants and donor management: Prepare budgets for grant proposals; track grant spending; compile monthly reports of staff time by program and project; manage financial reporting to funders  Other data analysis: Time permitting, the staff accountant may be asked to perform ad hoc analysis to support other business functions, such as membership conversions and renewals and audience segment growth

Experience working for another 501c3 tax-exempt organization would be a definite plus, and familiarity with QuickBooks Online, Intacct, and Bill.com would help you hit the ground running. 

Work Schedule

This is position is based in Charlottesville, Virginia and is open to candidates interested in part-time or full-time employment, with some flexibility on daily hours. Based on past corporate performance, we anticipate that the job will require approximately 25 hours per week as a part-time position, or 40 per week if expanded into full-time for the right candidate.  The Trace offers competitive compensation and a supportive, fulfilling work culture.
