Shift. works to eradicate abortion stigma through culture change, education, advocacy and pro-active policy. Position The Texas Advocacy Director will have strategic and operational responsibility for Shift’s Texas programs, expansion, and the day-to-day execution of Shift’s mission. S/He will develop a deep knowledge of the state’s communities, cultures, and political environment. Proficient understanding of Shift’s core programs, operations and business plans, in addition to the effective design and implementation of Shift’s strategic plan for Texas in collaboration with the Shift executive team.


Leadership & Management:

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of fiduciary and administrative oversite, communications, and systems; appropriate timelines and resources for optimal goal achievement and operation outcomes;
  • Actively engage and energize Shift’s partner organizations, coalition members, abortion funds, allies, providers and the state’s Whole Woman’s Health clinic sites – staff, physicians, patients and their supporters;
  • Ensure effective systems to track and report state programming progress, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication and diplomacy skills in writing and speaking;
  • Representing Shift. at coalition meetings with partnering organizations;
  • Continually broaden expertise in area of abortion service provision and culture change in assigned state;
  • Promote collaboration, negotiation and problem solving, communication;
  • Collaborate and work closely with collation orgs, legislators, vendors, related businesses, community-based organizations to promote Shift’s mission and goals;
  • Report and present coalition progress and program findings from coalition meetings and conferences back to the Shift. team and at state infrastructure project meetings and conferences;
  • Develop community partnerships to further the abortion stigma culture change work with Shift.;
  • Direct and assist coalition to develop policy and legislative actions that promotes abortion stigma culture change by developing statements, gathering direct service information and impact on state communities, reviewing and recommending endorsements of policies and advocating for policies/legislation at state levels;
  • Engage staff and coalition members in strategic prioritization of policies and strategy implementation based on needs assessment and capacity;
  • Balance multiple priorities, collaborate with various coalition partners on projects, move easily between internal project management and external communications;
  • Rapid problem solving and systems building/management;
  • Act as a liaison for coalition members/organizational interests at state agency meetings and with key decision makers;
  • Programmatic activities may include educating, organizing, training and mobilizing the public.

Fundraising & Communications:

  • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and regional expansion;
  • Assure that the organization’s mission, programs and services are consistently presented in strong, positive images to relevant stakeholders and potential funders;
  • Recruit and develop a community volunteer base.

Planning & New Business:

  • Build partnerships state/region wide, establishing relationships with allies, political and community leaders throughout the region, with targeted focus on the communities where Whole Woman’s Health has clinic sites;
  • Be an external local and national presence that publishes and communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional and national replication;
  • Maintain positive relations with pro-choice organizations and allies in the abortion care community while identifying and cultivating new relationships.

Skills Required

Qualifications The Texas Advocacy Director will be thoroughly committed to Shift’s nonprofit mission. All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience. Demonstrable experience and quantifiable successes/qualifications include:

  • A demonstrated commitment to each individual’s right to make decisions about their own reproductive health;
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed;
  • +3 years of progressively responsible management/leadership responsibilities;
  • +4 years of direct project management experience;
  • A four year college degree in Non-profit Management, Business Administrations, a related field, or an AA degree and four years of related experience;
  • A proven track record of implementing quality programs and data-driven program evaluation;
  • Excellence in organizational management;
  • Documented ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget;
  • Strong marketing, public relations, communications and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures;
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills;
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience using social media platforms to expand the reach of an organization;
  • Results-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning;
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people;
  • Currently reside in or be willing to relocate to the assigned state. Available to travel a minimum of 30% of the time;
  • Proficient skills in the Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Excel, Power Point, Access and Publisher.
