The Focused Ultrasound Foundation, a medical research, education and patient advocacy organization in Charlottesville, VA, is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant. This position will represent the Foundation in a professional manner and must perform with a high level of accuracy and problem solving ability.

The Senior Staff Accountant must be team player and enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven and results-oriented. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong analytical skills, written and verbal communication, administrative and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. The Senior Staff Accountant will work independently on projects, from conception to completion, and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of projects.

Job Duties

Accounts Receivable
• Monitor revenue by updating/entering appropriate information in accounting system and supplementary tracking systems, understanding various types of revenue (restricted, unrestricted, in-kind, indirect, reimbursement, etc.)
• Reconcile Income, Accounts Receivable, and Pledges monthly.
• Reconcile with Development Department’s records monthly. Produce Finance – Development variance reports.

Benefits & Employment Administration
• Responsible for reviewing, collecting, and file organization of new hire forms with employee’s, interns, and research fellows.
• Responsible for employee, intern and research fellow termination paperwork process.
• Manage staff time off tracking.
• Benefits administration including health, dental, health savings plan, simple IRA, Life insurance, STD, LTD, ACAC, and cell phone reimbursement.
• Manage annual open enrollment.
• Compile and maintain benefits records and documents.
• Conduct annual internal audit of required employee forms.
• Support annual benefit analysis and recommendation process.
• Provide benefit information to employees on eligibility, coverage, and other benefit matters.
• Assist employee benefit questions or issues for resolution with assistance by benefit providers.
• Wellness Program – recommend and implement planned activities in collaboration with assigned staff.
• Document employment and benefit processes and procedures. Review annually; recommend updates based on current best practices.

Accounting administration support
• Prepare and enter month end entries (wire fees, interest income).
• Monthly general review, investigate discrepancies through to positive resolution.
• Monitor subcontractor and service agreements for renewal and termination.
• Track non-disclosure agreements and certificates of insurance as required.
• Work with Accountant and Program leads on special project tracking needs. Develop and implement summary reports.
• Update fixed asset schedule for new and disposed assets.
• Problem solve by investigating various issues and provide solutions for correction or positive outcome.
• Prepare quarterly board book financial report formatting.
• Support annual audit preparation.
• Active member of team evaluating and implementing new accounting system.

Skills Required

Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Full understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
• Strong work tenure: five to 10 years of experience, preferably in a non-profit organization
• Extensive experience using Microsoft Excel
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, relational databases

• Able to work in a busy office environment; command high levels of concentration while inputting, checking and making calculations, coping with frequent interruptions, e.g. responding to staff/vendor inquiries
• Self-motivated with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently with minimal direction
• Strong interpersonal skills; verbal and written communication that conveys with clarity and succinctness; effectively develop business emails and letters
• Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
