Description
This position serves as the initial point of contact for applicants, clients, and visitors to the department. Performs responsible clerical and program support work involving the screening of agency visitors seeking financial and social services assistance.
- Interviews applicants and clients and provide information regarding various public assistance programs;
- Makes appointments;
- Assists clients in identifying resources, including public assistance programs, to meet their financial and social service needs;
- Assists clients with completion of application forms and other documents;
- Develops client records by conducting electronic searches of state and local data systems, registering and pending applications, assigning case records, and scheduling appointments;
- Provides coverage for client entry and program support duties, building maintenance reports, vehicle maintenance reports, and information security trouble reports;
- Vehicle Maintenance Reports may include but are not limited to: checking mileage, following up on faulty equipment, and driving vehicle to and from City Yard for repairs and maintenance.
- Assists in the development of office procedures;
- Operates a variety of office technology;
- Supervises and trains subordinate clerical employees;
- Interprets departmental and City policies and procedures for employees and public;
- Performs related tasks as required.

Skills Required
Minimum Qualifications:
– Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school
– Experience in a human service setting serving a diverse population.
– Experience collecting and interpreting data, and investigating conflicting information.
Preferred Qualifications:
– Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License is strongly preferred.
– Previous experience working in a local Social Services Department preferred.
– Experience working with populations with limited English proficiency preferred.
– Ability to speak, read, and/or write in Spanish preferred.
