Description

The non-profit organization Virginia Food Works seeks a passionate, energetic, creative,
and outgoing individual to further its mission of promoting food entrepreneurship and
assisting farmers with value-added food production and marketing.

 

Skills Required

REQUIREMENTS
Must live in or near Farmville, Virginia
Ability and proven skills to expand organizational outreach and mission
Proven management skills (communication, paper, and computer file organization, etc.)
Proven written and oral communication skills
Proficiency in MS Office software
Ability to learn other computer software, as needed

SKILLS NOT REQUIRED BUT BENEFICIAL
Knowledge and expertise on Virginia farming and/or local food production sustainability
Knowledge and skills in grant writing

Additional Info

WORK RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Market Development- recruit commercial food clients; attend industry trade shows
and conferences; promote services through media and personal appearances
2. Operational- explain regulatory compliance guidelines to clients; maintain
operational manual and protocols; coordinate food production- including delivery
and storage for containers and raw food products; write grants to support nonprofit’s
mission; maintain detailed recordkeeping
3. Processing- assist Commercial clients with the production of food products using the
Cannery and Commercial Kitchen’s equipment; operate food processing equipment
(training will be provided); manage a staff producing food products
4. Educational/Business Development- meet with growers and chefs to develop recipes
for commercial production and assist with market development; work with area
resources (Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Department of Agriculture and
Consumer Services, etc.) to promote services

Depending on seasonal workload, weekly work hours fluctuate from part time to full
time. There is a minimum of 25 hours per week in the non-peak season of December
through March. Full time hours are necessary from April to November.
