Description

The Program Officer – Communications plays a key role in supporting the health and growth of the Foundation’s grantmaking, scholarship programs, and community partnerships. This role serves as the lead staff for Give Local Piedmont, helps maintain and grow NPCF’s visibility, and ensures meaningful engagement with assigned nonprofits and community stakeholders. The Program Officer is expected to contribute proactively and enthusiastically to achieving the Foundation’s mission, vision, and goals.

Job Duties

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Services

• Develop relationships with assigned nonprofit organizations across the four-county region; conduct site visits and assess community need in assigned service areas.

• Support strategic partnership development and program innovation.

• Ensure grant and scholarship application processes, guidelines, and reporting requirements are current, mission-aligned, and accessible.

• Assist with the administration and communication of all NPCF grant cycles, including:

Reviewing applications using Foundant software

Coordinating site visits and due diligence

Synthesizing grantee follow-up reports for internal and external communications

• Attend local nonprofit roundtables and represent NPCF in community settings.

• Regularly conduct site visits and document insights.

• Assist in launching and managing new NPCF program initiatives.

Give Local Piedmont

• Serve as staff lead for Give Local Piedmont, including:

Mastering the campaign’s resources, tools, and history

Supporting NPO training, marketing, and public engagement efforts

Coordinating volunteers and distribution of promotional materials

Contributing to budgeting, timeline management, and evaluation

Leading outreach, ad placements, and community visibility

Communications & Public Relations

• Implement effective, inclusive communication strategies aligned with NPCF’s brand and values.

• Maintain NPCF Social Media platforms and content

• Write and distribute press releases, email campaigns, bi-weekly e-news and newsletters.

• Support planning and production of digital and print communications.

• Assist in crafting donor and advisor outreach materials, especially for professional advisors (e.g., estate planners, financial professionals).

• Ensure public materials are inclusive, accessible, and promote a fair, respectful environment for all.

Skills Required

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree; preferably in nonprofit management, communications, public relations, marketing, community development, or a related field. – A combination of education and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Prior experience working in the nonprofit sector.

• Experience with and knowledge of local nonprofit organizations

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Familiarity with CRM or database platforms is a plus.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative in a small-team environment.

• Comfortable using remote collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom, webinars, online tutorials).

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including nonprofit leaders, donors, volunteers, and community members.

• Public speaking experience and confidence in presenting to groups of various sizes.

• Demonstrated commitment to the mission, vision, and values of NPCF.
