Connor’s Heroes is dedicated to helping the families in Central Virginia cope with childhood cancer and our community’s researchers conquer it. Our mission is to build a community of heroes who provide hope, guidance, and support.

Every week a child in Central Virginia is diagnosed with cancer. Since 2006, Connor’s Heroes has helped more than 1,000 children from infants to teenagers. The Program Director supports children and their families if they are diagnosed, treated or live in Central Virginia. Connor’s Heroes assists families during their child’s cancer treatment and beyond.

Job Duties

Identifying and serving patient families at the time of diagnosis and throughout active treatment

Providing emotional and financial support to families with a child in active treatment

Providing bereavement support as needed

Maintaining patient information in the database

Assisting with special events for patients and families

Assisting with the delivery and coordination of the Heroes Bags and Backpacks program

Identifying patients who need enhanced interactions, including Family Fun Packs, travel fund assistance and support from the Unique Needs Fund, with guidance from hospital Social Worker as needed

Preparing and presenting the programs report to the Board, including regular updates about patient services and support

Communicating with Child Life and other hospital staff to ensure Connor’s Heroes is continuing to meet the needs of inpatient families

Regularly visiting and communicating with families on the inpatient floor and visiting the outpatient clinic at least bi-monthly

Coordinating families for Heroes Art Ball annual fundraiser, including logistics on the night of the event

Coordinating additional support services for families by leveraging local partnerships

Other duties that may from time to time be assigned by the Executive Director

Skills Required

Background in counseling, social work or other related fields highly preferred

Ability to balance a large caseload of patients with unique and complicated circumstances

Ability to build relationships and rapport with a diverse population

Detail oriented, ability to follow through and prioritize needs

Comfortable working within a hospital environment

Work Schedule

Exempt position, 40 hours per week with the flexibility to partially work from home.
