Description
The Department of Juvenile Justice operates and is responsible for the vast majority of local Court Service Units (often known as juvenile probation offices) across the Commonwealth, as well as the state-operated Juvenile Correctional Center, Bon Air. On any given day, the Department has somewhere between 4,500 and 5,000 youth under some kind of supervision, with more than 90 percent of those youth being supervised in their communities through diversion, probation or parole.
The Department of Juvenile Justice 16th District Court Service Unit is seeking a qualified individual to provide case management/supervision to probationers, parolees, and their families in a manner consistent with Minimum Standards and Unit Policy; determines risk level; develops supervision plans for each individual; makes appropriate referrals for services and facilitates funding; prepares committal packets on juveniles committed to DJJ, documents all case contacts, statuses, reports, and services in case files and on BADGE; prepares and submits legible and accurate schedules, time sheets, leave, workload & other reports; receives and evaluates juvenile and domestic relations complaints and interviews; applies and documents probable cause disposition criteria, processes and distributes applicable paperwork, makes required referrals and performs necessary follow-up; consults with judges, attorneys, law enforcement officials, school personnel, community members and other service agencies to expedite and enhance disposition of complaints; makes custody decisions regarding detention of delinquent offenders; performs on-call after hours intake duty; provides Court with Social History and other Court reports; appears and testifies in Court; provides other forms, documentation, and court coverage as required; accurately relays CSU policies and procedures to the public and other agencies; participates in FAPT process; displays polite, helpful, professional demeanor; perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
This position will be located within the Charlottesville branch office, however based on business needs this position could be moved to any of the locations throughout the district to work.
Skills Required
Minimum qualifications for this position are knowledge of juvenile justice system and court proceedings as well as of adolescent growth and development and social problems that impact juveniles. Experience in case management, interviewing practices and procedures, and/or counseling techniques. Experience in performing assessments of client’s needs and identification of community and agency resources. Additional qualifications the ability to document services and maintain records and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Preferred qualifications for this position is a Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, or related field or commensurate experience. Experience working with maladaptive youth and their families is also preferred.
