United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area is seeking applications and nomination for the position of President.

Summary of Opportunity

With its roots dating back to 1943, United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area (UWTJA) is a premier nonprofit with a local Board of Directors serving Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson. UWTJA’s vision is of a strong, healthy, and vibrant community that helps people rise above challenges to reach their full potential. The organization engages volunteers, leads initiatives, and collaborates with community partners to achieve this mission. Cathy Smith Train, UWTJA’s President over the last 30 years, has provided exceptional visionary and energetic leadership. She has recently announced her decision to step down. Seen as a pillar in the community, UWTJA is defined by three key areas of focus:

  • Community Philanthropy
  • Catalytic Leadership
  • Dynamic Grant making

Organizational Overview:

Through philanthropy, catalytic leadership, and dynamic grant making, the UWTJA is focused in three areas of impact: School Readiness, Self-Sufficiency, and Community Health. Direct services, leadership, and grant making are strategies to achieve specific outcomes as determined by the impact areas. UWTJA’s impact teams include board members and community volunteers who actively research community needs, are informed by subject matter experts, and who recommend strategies for investment.

Role Summary

The President/CEO is the leader of UWTJA, establishing a vision for community impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff, and volunteers. A key element of this work is raising additional funds and strategically cultivating key donors. The President/CEO is the chief mobilizer; s/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public, and corporate sectors to improve conditions in the community. The President/CEO is also the steward of the brand and understands her/his role in growing and protecting the reputation of UWTJA. S/he is responsible for building trust in UWTJA and its relevance in the community. S/he strives to leverage United Way’s breadth of community presence, relationships, and strategy. The President/CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals to further the mission of the UWTJA by creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact. S/he will catalyze others’ commitment to mission to create real social change that leads to better lives and healthier communities.

The Candidate

The Board is seeking a leader with vision, a track record of operational excellence, and the ability to convene. The successful candidate will be an experienced, strategic, and credible leader with an enthusiastic commitment to the values and mission of UWTJA.
