Description

Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle trains volunteers to work one-on-one with adult students who are striving to improve their reading, writing, and English-speaking skills. We are looking for someone to help us tell the story of LVCA’s work and impact, both externally (to potential tutors and donors) and internally (to current students, tutors, and donors). A significant part of this job is creatively sharing the impact our services have on our students, volunteers, and community through print media, web and social media, radio, television, video, and personal appearances.

This position reports to the Executive Director, and also works closely with the Program Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. Candidate must be comfortable working with people from a wide range of backgrounds. The successful applicant will enjoy juggling various tasks within the realm of communications and marketing.

Job Duties

Primary tasks–

External stakeholder services:

Along with the Executive Director and Volunteer Coordinator, help recruit tutors each year through a variety of methods:

  • Print media (must have design skills)
  • Radio and television
  • Social media, websites
  • Representation at community events and/or support in coordinating representation at events
Communicate the mission and impact of LVCA to the Charlottesville/ Albemarle community:
  • Maintain LVCA’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Use social media to the fullest extent possible.
  • Keep LVCA website updated (in collaboration with our web designer)
  • Create and send weekly tutor and student email newsletters based on information obtained from program staff; narrate newsletter on YouTube for non-readers.
  • Create and send monthly email newsletters to donors/supporters
  • Create and send “prospective tutor” email newsletter
  • Send Public Service Announcements (PSAs) regarding tutor training events to media
  • Order custom LVCA merchandise/giveaways when needed
  • Promote Wordplay (annual fundraising event) with the Wordplay committee
  • Add/update LVCA information on online community calendars and volunteering websites.

Internal stakeholder services:

  • Update office monitor with images and events (as needed)
  • Add training dates, workshops, information sessions, etc., to the public Google calendar on LVCA website
  • Layout and Design of printed products: Joy of Writing book, Annual Report, annual paper newsletter, etc.
  • Create marketing materials for classes and workshops (as needed)
  • Promote student and tutor events: “Joy of Writing” reading and potluck (summer); Student Achievement Ceremony (fall); to our students, volunteers, and donors

Skills Required

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience using professional design software for creating marketing materials
  • Demonstrable writing and editing skills
  • Social media/website management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including comfort with public speaking/media appearances
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment

Work Schedule

Primarily daytime hours, with a mutually agreed-upon schedule. Occasional evening or weekend hours will be required to attend organizational events and other activities. Once established in this role, some remote work will be acceptable.
