Lead Community Organizer
Position Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Organizer to spearhead our grassroots organizing efforts. The Lead Organizer will play a vital role in mobilizing residents, fostering leadership, and building a powerful collective voice for positive change in Charlottesville’s public housing communities. This position requires a strategic thinker who is deeply committed to social justice and has a proven ability to build relationships, develop leaders, and drive impactful campaigns. The Lead Organizer will work closely with PHAR’s members, board of directors, and community partners to address critical issues.
Responsibilities:
Strategy & Leadership:
-Develop and implement strategic campaign plans to address critical issues facing public housing residents, such as redevelopment, rent increases, maintenance concerns, and displacement with the Executive Director and the Board
-Build and maintain relationships with residents, community partners, and elected officials.
-Provide guidance and support to PHAR’s organizing team.
Community Building & Engagement:
-Identify, recruit, and develop resident leaders within public housing communities.
-Facilitate resident meetings, workshops, and trainings on organizing skills and tenant rights.
-Foster a sense of community and collective power among residents.
Campaign Execution:
-Coordinate and execute collective action campaigns, including door-to-door canvassing, petition drives, and meetings with elected officials.
-Utilize social media and other online tools to amplify PHAR’s message and engage residents.
-Track and analyze campaign data to measure progress and adapt strategies.
-Other duties, as requested
Qualifications:
-Experience: Proven experience in community organizing and campaign management. Proven track record of successful community organizing and campaign management and a strong understanding of housing and redevelopment issues and policies
-Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
-Knowledge of Charlottesville’s low-income housing preferred
-Technology: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and comfortable learning new software.
-Qualities: Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
-Passion: A commitment to social justice and supporting affordable housing initiatives
