Appalachian Voices is a nonprofit advocacy organization that works to achieve an Appalachia with healthy, intact ecosystems and advance a just transition to a generative and equitable clean energy economy. We have 35 staff members located in offices in Boone, N.C., Charlottesville, Va., Norton, Va., Knoxville, Tenn., and Durham, N.C.

Job Description

Appalachian Voices seeks a full-time IT Specialist to support programmatic staff in advancing a clean energy transition in our region. The IT Specialist will report to and work closely with the Director of Digital Innovation and Technology to manage our technology systems. The position will be responsible for desktop support, troubleshooting, computer maintenance, and network and digital security for our three regional offices. The IT Specialist will also provide technology support for our cloud-based Google Workspace for Nonprofits, and assist in supporting communications, advocacy, and fundraising through IT, depending on candidate skill set and needs of the organization.

To be successful, the candidate should have a strong knowledge of Mac and Windows computers and cloud-based servers, possess excellent troubleshooting skills, have a keen interest in learning new technologies, and be a collaborative team player. Top candidates will also have the ability to communicate timely and effectively with end users, community partners, and other IT professionals.

Compensation

This is a full-time position and is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit; specific terms and conditions of employment may be subject to a future Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary is commensurate with experience, however, the expected salary range is between $50,000 – $65,000; candidates seeking the higher end of this range should be able to demonstrate very strong background, experience, or other factors. Job Duties

Primary Responsibilities

  • Desktop, software, and equipment support
  • Security and backups for staff computers and servers
  • Cloud-based and local server administration
  • Google Workspace for Nonprofits administration
  • Zoom phone administration

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Administer other cloud-based tools as skills allow (i.e., Salesforce)
  • Purchase equipment and maintain equipment inventory lists
  • Assist in regularly evaluating digital and IT systems to ensure they meet necessary demands
  • Potential for web development / website administration, based on skills and experience

Skills Required

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong desire to work for an organization working on the front lines of energy-related environmental issues in Appalachia
  • Working knowledge of hardware and software configuration for networks, Mac and Windows computers, and peripherals
  • Working knowledge of cloud-based server administration
  • Familiarity with information security practices and procedures
  • Excellent troubleshooting and creative problem solving skills
  • Effective communication skills with end users and IT professionals
  • Skilled at collaborating in a team-oriented environment
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize shifting responsibilities
  • Proficiency in PHP, HTML and Javascript preferred
  • Experience with Google Apps for Nonprofits, Salesforce, and other cloud-based tools preferred

Work Schedule

This is a hybrid position, holding weekly office hours in one of our three main offices: Boone, N.C., Charlottesville, Va., or Norton, Va. Preference will be given to candidates who reside in the Appalachian region near one of these primary locations. Travel in North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee is required.
