Full-Time Community Organizer Charlottesville Public Housing Association of Residents Overview: The Charlottesville Public Housing Association of Residents (PHAR) is hiring a full-time (40 hours/week) Community Organizer.  PHAR’s mission is “to educate and empower low-income residents to protect and improve our communities through collective action.” This position engages in community organizing to increase the participation of low-income people in policy-making to improve: quality of life for public housing residents, affordable housing for extremely low-income families, public housing preservation and economic self-sufficiency. This position reports directly to the PHAR Lead Organizer.

Job Duties

Specific duties include:   
  1. Outreach: build relationships with public housing residents, distribute information,
motivate residents to participate in events and activities.
  1. Implement PHAR “organizing campaigns to win” in accordance with the PHAR
Strategic Plan and the PHAR Organizing Team.
  1. Attend and Conduct Meetings: PHAR Board and committee meetings, tenants
meetings, government meetings, and setting up organizing meetings and workshops with residents.
  1. Other responsibilities as assigned.

Skills Required

The ideal candidate will possess…
  • Knowledge and experience with Charlottesville’s low-income community,
  • Excellent communication skills,
  • Basic computer skills,
  • Experience in grassroots organizing and developing effective leaders,
  • Commitment to improving lives of low-wealth people, and
  • Flexible scheduling abilities.
Candidates must have or demonstrate the ability to:  develop a broad understanding of local, state, and national public housing issues, policies, and regulations. Not required but considered are:
  • Previous experience with community organizing and/or activism,
  • Previous experience in governance,
  • High School Diploma or GED, and
  • Knowledge of and experience with Charlottesville’s low-income community.

Work Schedule

40 Hours a Week
