The preferred hiring range for is between $19.00 – $24.99 an hour ($39,520.00 – $51,979.20 Annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. - The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. (If no diploma or GED is obtained, must have a minimum of 2 years of direct work experience in the field.)

Requires experience in the operation of motorized equipment and experience in the maintenance, construction and repair of Utility lines including but not limited to gas, water, and facilities.

Possession of an operator’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia required. Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Drivers’ License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia required within six (6) months of the date of hire;

Must obtain certification in plastic pipe fusion and must become qualified in the use of combustible gas indicator, and must maintain all certifications as required by applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Position requires a 30-minute emergency response time and is subject to emergency and stand-by call.

Position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Skills Required
Skills: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing construction equipment; repair and manual tasks of utility gas work; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to supervise; working under pressure during emergency situations; dependability; and knowledge of federal standard codes regarding gas line construction or repair.
