Summary
The Financial Manager oversees the financial operations of Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) using generally accepted accounting principles, sound internal controls, and financial management practices. Works with the Executive Director and Finance Committee to conduct the financial functions of the synagogue and prepare reports.

Job Duties
Duties & Responsibilities
The Financial Manager’s duties and responsibilities include:
Bookkeeping
- Maintains accounting records in Quickbooks
- Records vendor bills; pays bills weekly, ensuring timely receipt of payments by vendors
- Reconciles credit card statements
- Keeps records of restricted and temporarily-restricted transactions and restricted fund balances, income, and expenses to be able to provide reports on restricted funds to donors, trustees, and the Board
- Tracks endowment funds monthly and reports to Trustee
- Works with Executive Director to complete fund reconciliations and fiscal year close out at the end of the fiscal year (June 30)
Payroll
- Keeps records, including paid time off, salaries and wages, and selected benefits, and provides accurate payroll recording for each payroll through Paychex Flex
- Creates benefits worksheets for payroll calculations
- Makes sure payroll provider supplies W-2’s and all essential tax reports and filings
Budgeting
- Creates the budget preparation worksheets for staff input
- Consolidates worksheets for budget review with Executive Director and Finance Committee
- Once annual budget is approved by Board, works with staff to create month-by-month budget detail for the year
Reporting and Information Requests
- Serves as liaison to the Finance and other committees for financial information
- Ensures completeness and accuracy of accounting records and budget performance by providing monthly financial reports (income statement, balance sheet, budget versus actual) to Executive Director and Finance Committee
- Provides financial summary reports to the CBI Board on a quarterly basis and financial summary for the annual report
- Supports clergy, staff, and CBI Board in their understanding of financial matters and provides financial information to staff and lay leaders upon request, as appropriate
Other
- Generates sales tax reports and files for refunds; pays sales tax for gift shop
- Mails tax statements to members and donors annually in mid-January
- Completes development of the financial procedures manual and submits to CBI Board for approval.
- Maintains financial policies and procedures for the organization
- Assists with upgrading of the Quickbooks accounting system and its integration into the cloud-based membership and synagogue software program (ShulCloud)
- Performs other financial duties as requested by Executive Director
Skills Required
Skills/Experience/Education
- Knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and 5-10 years of accounting experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or other business-related field required, CPA strongly preferred
- 3+ years as a manager in an accounting or related financial function
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel in particular) and able to produce reports and perform monthly performance analysis in Excel
- Experienced Quickbooks user
- Experienced in payroll and working with outsourced vendors for payroll and benefits programs
- Ability to learn/understand databases quickly
- Is detail-oriented, accurate, highly organized, and has good time management
- Ability to handle multiple activities and responsibilities
- Ability to work independently and well with a team
- Strong sense of customer service and can work with a wide variety of people on various financial issues
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Experience with synagogue or religious organizational operations a plus
Work Schedule
This position is part-time 20-25 hours per week.
