Description
The Haven seeks a passionate, mission-oriented, and inclusive leader to serve as Executive Director (ED).
THE HAVEN
The Haven’s mission is to provide a safe and welcoming space for people experiencing homelessness or extreme poverty, supporting individuals and families as they pursue stability through connections to resources and creative housing interventions. Located in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, trained staff and dedicated volunteers at The Haven practice radical hospitality, opening the doors wide for any and everyone, no matter their circumstances.
The Haven has an operating budget of just above $2 million. Fully staffed, The Haven employs just under thirty people including sixteen full-time employees and thirteen part-time employees.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Executive Director of The Haven has broad responsibility in both highly strategic and visionary efforts to end homelessness, and very tactical and operational responsibilities to ensure the effective and appropriate operational support of the organization.
Key responsibilities for the role include strategy and board development, management and staff engagement, philanthropy, administration, programmatic development across the continuum of care, and fostering collaboration and partnerships with other agencies. In everything, the Executive Director must support diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, and have a keen understanding of systemic injustices and the impact of trauma for guests, staff, and volunteers. In balancing the variety of responsibilities, the Executive Director is charged with maintaining The Haven’s orientation to radical hospitality, valuing and learning from the contributions of guests, and to welcoming all on a daily basis.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
The Haven seeks an experienced, empathetic, and strategic leader with a track record of success in a relevant executive position. The ED must be mission-driven, judicious, and principled; able to make sound decisions; and able to work collaboratively with a diverse group of community members and colleagues.
The ED will be an effective, equitable, and inclusive developer of people who can manage large projects and issues and rapidly assess situations with multiple outcomes and consequences. They will be a flexible and creative problem-solver who is able to move smoothly from a big-picture view to immediate engagement with an opportunity. In other words: They can both articulate a vision, and make it happen.
In addition to these competencies and attributes, the following specific qualifications are required:
● Non-profit experience, preferably working with marginalized populations
● Management experience, including supervising personnel
● Excellent emotional intelligence and cultural awareness
● Inclusive, self-directed, adaptable, agile, and flexible
● Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
● Proven ability to work well with others, including a diverse collection of team members, and people experiencing extreme poverty
● Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
● Strong collaborator and meeting facilitator
● Comfortable with technology and able to learn new software programs
● Good personal and professional boundaries
● Compassionate and empathetic
Experience with nonprofits addressing homelessness or access to affordable housing is preferred, as is understanding of Trauma-Informed Care and Harm Reduction principles. Patience, resilience, and a good sense of humor are also appreciated.
People with lived experience related to homelessness and extreme poverty, and those from groups traditionally underrepresented in leadership are particularly encouraged to apply.
