Description

The Mediation Center of Charlottesville (MCC) seeks an Executive Director to join a dedicated team advancing alternative dispute resolution in the greater Charlottesville community. The Executive Director provides leadership internally and externally to build support for the Center’s mission of providing affordable and accessible dispute resolution services through mediation and education, enabling its clients to transform conflict into an opportunity for growth and change.

The Executive Director works in partnership with the Board of Directors and directly supervises two employees. He/she/they must be committed to creating an environment that is welcoming and inclusive and that reflects and respects the rich diversity of the communities we serve. Job Duties

  • Programs
    1. Oversee implementation and evaluation of current programs (court mediation, self-referred mediation, mediator certification training, continuing mediator education, co-parenting classes, community education and workshops)
    2. Develop, implement, and evaluate new programs
    3. Maintain compliance with state mediator standards and contractual obligations as local Mediation Coordinator
  • Board relations and development
    1. Work with the MCC Board of Directors on strategic planning and organizational goals and objectives as well as organizational policies and procedures for attaining goals
    2. Prepare ED reports for MCC board meetings and communicate regularly with the Board to provide all information needed for it to make informed decisions
    3. Serve on the Board of Directors of Resolution Virginia, a statewide consortium of community mediation centers
  • Supervision of staff and volunteers
    1. Hire and supervise staff responsible for the daily operation of the Center (intakes, record-keeping, data reporting, scheduling, class enrollment and preparation)
    2. Train and supervise interns and office volunteers
    3. Supervise volunteer mediators and provide necessary training
  • Community relations/Marketing
    1. Increase public awareness of mediation and of MCC
    2. Market MCC services to diverse populations
    3. Forge working relationships with local community agencies, courts, government entities, and other mediation providers locally and throughout the state.
    4. Recruit volunteers of diverse economic and ethnic backgrounds
    5. Develop written materials (newsletters, brochures, webpage) to create brand identity, describe and publicize benefits of mediation, and explain services offered by MCC
  • Fundraising
    1. Work with Board of Directors on development committee
    2. Direct an annual fundraising appeal
    3. Develop and maintain list of possible donors
    4. Conduct outreach to individuals, businesses, and faith organizations
    5. Work with Board on fundraising events
    6. Identify sources of funding from foundations and other grantors
    7. Write grants to fund new and existing programs
  • Administration/Finances
    1. Prepare and manage the annual budget
    2. Keep impeccable financial records
    3. Execute rigorous fiscal management for sustainable financial operations
    4. Manage all finances including payment of bills, payroll, tax forms, invoices for services, collection of fees, investments, insurance
    5. Maintain computers and keep up to date on computer programming and software 
    6. Oversee purchase of office supplies and replenishment of brochures and other MCC literature

Skills Required

Qualifications

  • Dedication to community peacebuilding through alternative conflict resolution
  • Experience in a senior management or administrative role with supervisory experience
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Knowledge of mediation and VA’s court system or willingness to undergo training in needed areas
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to listen and respond to concerns of all stakeholders–staff, board members, volunteers, court personnel, and clients
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity in the workplace and beyond
