Description

The Highland Center — a multi-service organization that serves as a community anchor and a catalyst for cultural and economic development in Highland County, Virginia, and the surrounding Allegheny Highlands region — is seeking an executive director to build on a 20-year track record of success and accomplishment. The Highland Center owns a beautifully renovated 1920s public school building that hosts numerous special events and houses other tenants. The organization also offers grant-funded programs that promote community economic development, youth development, and local food and agriculture. We are seeking a visionary and entrepreneurial leader with hands-on programmatic and operational experience who can galvanize a small staff and committed volunteers to lead the organization to its next stage of development.

Job Duties

Reporting to and working in partnership with the board of directors, the executive director will:

  • Establish strategic and operational goals and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal legal requirements and commitments to partners and donors
  • Lead the staff and board in developing a realistic annual budget and making financial decisions consistent with the budget as approved by the board
  • Lead fundraising efforts, including supporting the board’s involvement in fundraising, personally cultivating and soliciting donors, and supervising development staff and implementation of fundraising plans
  • Manage staff and volunteers who deliver the organization’s programs and services, including The Highland Center facility
  • Cultivate positive relationships for the Center and the community with the media, nonprofit organizations, businesses, foundations, community organizations and donors
  • Represent the Center and the community in key associations and organizations by participating in regional, state, and national collaborative efforts, and speaking in public settings

Skills Required

  • Understanding of nonprofit organizations and their operations, including reporting to a board of directors, fundraising, grants management, and nonprofit accounting and financial management
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make public presentations
  • Ability to collaborate and build consensus
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Office skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Strong leadership ability, sound judgment and high professional ethics

Additional Info

This is a full-time, exempt position that will require some travel and work outside regular office hours, including evenings and weekends. Benefits include paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. A valid Virginia driver’s license is required.
