Description
In 1894, fourteen Richmond women came together in the parlor of Jane Crawford Looney Lewis’s home on West Franklin Street. By the time they left, they had established a literary and cultural association for “the delightful friction of well-trained minds.” Over a century later, at the Bolling Haxall House on East Franklin Street, a new generation of women come together for the exact same purpose. We are The Woman’s Club.
On behalf of our client, we are conducting a search for The Woman’s Club’s next Executive Director.
The Woman’s Club at the Bolling Haxall House has a unique opportunity for an experienced, passionate leader to steward, support and advance the mission and the work of this dynamic, “traditionally untraditional” organization.
The Executive Director will work closely with the Boards of The Woman’s Club and the Bolling Haxall House Foundation. The Woman’s Club is comprised of more than 1200 members and located in the historic Bolling Haxall House in downtown Richmond. Reporting to The Woman’s Club Board of Governors and the Bolling Haxall House Foundation’s Board of Directors, this person will work collaboratively and actively to build upon more than 125 years of offering diverse, educational and entertaining speaker programs and other events that foster life-long learning, bring new ideas and offer opportunities for building relationships and sharing civil and inspiring conversations.
As The Woman’s Club was founded on expanding knowledge, broadening our scope of understanding, and encouraging curiosity and collegiality, this person will champion our Woman’s Club Scholarship program awarded to learners of all ages.
Additionally, this person, with the Board of the Bolling Haxall House, will champion the historic preservation and ongoing work that maintains the home of The Woman’s Club and is a National Historic Landmark. This includes managing maintenance decisions, vendors, and contractors, working with staff and Board members to raise funding through annual funds and special campaigns and working with community partners to make the House accessible and sought-after for events, weddings, and other special occasions.
This person will respectfully and thoughtfully inspire a culture of courtesy, trust and inclusion for staff, volunteers, and members. Working to enhance our member experience at every touchpoint is a key component of this position. The ability to multi-task, take on unexpected or spontaneous assignments and create a caring, supportive workplace are highly desired qualifications.
Job Duties
• Serve as Chief Operating Officer reporting to the Board of Governors of The Woman’s Club.
• Create a welcoming, collegial, inspiring, educational, social experience for members, guests, staff, and volunteers at every touchpoint with The Woman’s Club.
• Oversee and manage the annual budget, with close oversight of the day-to-day budget and cash flow of both organizations. Monitoring/Overseeing finances, book and record-keeping.
• Support and execute the work of the Board of Governors of The Woman’s Club and the Board of Directors of the Bolling Haxall House Foundation.
• Manage a small staff and build a committed and appreciated team.
• In collaboration with the Boards, execute plans that advance the organization, such as annual fundraising, events, program improvements, speaker and guest relations for paid events.
• Drive the growth and retention of new members and retention of current members, which are key to long-term success.
• Assure clarity, opportunity and efficiency around staff positions and responsibilities. Leadership in setting agendas, executing strategic plans, as well as day-to-day priorities.
• Nurture community outreach and relationships with like-minded organizations.
Skills Required
• The qualified candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience (nonprofit experience desired, but not required).

• Proficiency with current technology is essential.
• The ideal candidate is an unflappable problem solver with the ability to pivot, assume responsibilities in an instant and multi-task while maintaining decorum and calm. The candidate will embody the trait of “grace under pressure”.
• The ability to build dynamic internal and external relationships with a diverse spectrum of stakeholders is expected. A sense of humor and curiosity is appreciated.
• Inclusive, collaborative, and confident leadership skills in working with staff, volunteers and members.
