POSITION TITLE: Executive Director
Reports To: The Board of Directors
Overview
Meals on Wheels started in Charlottesville in 1977. For more than 40 years, the organization and its volunteers have delivered hot, nutritious meals to the ill, aging, and convalescing residents of the Charlottesville/Albemarle area who find it difficult or impossible to prepare meals for themselves.
The organization is looking for a dynamic leader capable of leading the organization forward, developing a vision for its future, and continuing its strong record of impact in the Charlottesville area.
The position will report to the Board of Directors and will have supervisory responsibility for any professional and administrative staff and interns.
Job Duties
Position Summary
The person in this role will be responsible for the following:
• Community Leadership. Effectively communicate and model the mission and vision of the organization to staff, volunteers, clients, donors, other stakeholders, and the broader community. Participate in community outreach events and partnerships as appropriate and ensure that the organization successfully delivers on any agreements. Ensure that the organization and its mission, programs and services are consistently presented in a strong light. Maintains personal visibility in the community as an advocate for Meals on Wheels clientele. Develop and grow relationships with all existing and potential donors, grantors, and sponsors. Deepen understanding of Meals on Wheels’ place in our community landscape.
• Program Management. Oversee the design, promotion, delivery and evaluation of quality programs and services. Monitor and assess community needs to guide new program development, particularly as it relates to the strategic plan goals. Collaborate with others in the community to enhance services where possible and appropriate. Hire, manage, and inspire a robust and experienced staff. Collaborate with staff to develop annual work plans, staff reviews, opportunities for staff feedback and capacity building.
• Fundraising. Oversee the planning and implementation of fundraising activities, research funding sources, develop and implement strategies to approach funders, cultivate donors, submit proposals, and maintain any relevant records. Ensure the timely and accurate delivery of donor acknowledgments and grant reports. Manage grant tracking, reporting, and implementation. Implement philanthropic activities including the Annual Appeal and reporting, annual fundraising events, major donor outreach and corporate sponsorships and partnerships.
• Board interaction. Advise, inform, and work with the board to develop and implement a strategic plan. Develop and share information and schedule, attend, and facilitate all board and committee meetings. Regularly communicate with all board members and work with the board to deliver on organizational goals.
• Oversee communication activities. Develop a communications plan and oversee all communication activities and material. Manage the relationship with Meals on Wheels America. Broadly communicate the impacts and story of Meals on Wheels to build community awareness and understanding. Forge mission-aligned partnerships with county, city, and local networks.
• Financial Oversight. Develop and manage the annual budget and conduct operations within those parameters. Collaborate as appropriate to prepare tax and audit documents, implement appropriate financial controls, and monitor contracts and costs. Maintain legal and accounting compliance according to 501(c)3 requirements. In collaboration with the Board, oversee cash flow, record-keeping, fiscal processes, and annual audit.
• Human Resources. In collaboration with the Board, develop and implement human resource tools that demonstrate investment in staff. Provide learning and development opportunities for staff and self. Provide effective supervision for all staff, participate in ongoing succession planning, and conduct stay and exit interviews for all staff.
The individual may perform other duties, not listed here, deemed necessary for the well-being of the agency.
Skills Required
Position Qualifications
Successful candidates will have a bachelor’s degree (or higher) and a minimum of three years of management experience, as well as a current and valid driver’s license and the ability to meet minimum automobile liability insurance requirements. Nonprofit management experience is a plus.
A successful Executive Director will:
• Possess a deep commitment to the mission of the organization;
• Articulate a clear and inspiring vision for the organization and its work;
• Serve as an effective public champion, relationship builder, and spokesperson for Meals on Wheels in Charlottesville and the surrounding communities;
• Actively promote vital connections between volunteers, clients, donors, staff, and other community stakeholders;
• Ensure the effective coordination of programs resulting in a high level of service for our clients, volunteers, and donors;
• Achieve fundraising success through a strong development program;
• Collaborate well with the Board of Directors to strengthen the organization and its governance practices; and
• Foster open communication that leads to cooperation, feedback, and teamwork among staff, resulting in a positive organizational culture and work environment.
Work Schedule
This job is 30 hours per week. The E.D. is required to be present weekday morning to ensure operations run smoothly and all meals get delivered that day, until mid-afternoon. Attend all special events such as fundraisers, board meetings, and volunteer appreciation activities are also job requirements.
