Description

The Virginia Discovery Museum Education Manager works to ensure that VDM’s mission is represented in its programs, events and exhibits while furthering the museum’s vision of being an educational resource to all children in our community.

This full-time hire works 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday 9:15-5:15 pm. Occasional Saturday hours may be required to support museum events. The ideal candidate must be outgoing, creative, enthusiastic, and enjoy working with children and families.

 The Education Manager:

  • Manages VDM’s Paid Workshops and programs
  • Manages and coordinates VDM’s Holiday Workshops
  • Plans and implements Field Trip add-ons
  • Oversees and coordinates VDM’s relationships with external program providers
  • Facilitates half the museum’s summer camps
  • Plans and manages Kidvention, VDM’s community science fair
  • Implements drop-in programming as needed
  • Works with exhibits staff to develop educational, interactive exhibits
  • Assists with maintaining VDM’s social media presence
  • Plans and implements VDM’s Date Night Drop-Off one Friday each month (hours 12pm -9pm)
  • Coordinates the museum’s Youth Advisory Board
  • Assists in gallery opening, closing, and maintenance
  • Helps with front desk staffing, as needed.

Requirements

Candidates must have an undergraduate degree (education degree preferred) and at least 2-3 years experience working in education, with children and/or in the non-profit setting. A successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work well in a collaborative environment.

Founded in 1981, the Virginia Discovery Museum provides educational and enrichment opportunities in literacy, science, math, and the arts to the children of the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. It is the mission of the museum to foster intellectual curiosity and development for all children in the community. VDM works to prepare children for elementary school by offering engaging, developmentally appropriate exhibits, programs, and events. In 2019, the museum welcomed over 70,000 visitors.  VDM is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization.
