Organization Background: Since its founding in 2015, the Virginia African American Cultural Center (VAACC) has partnered with educational and cultural institutions to produce compelling interactive programs, artwork and performances that enliven the rich story of African Americans, past and present. Using a collaborative model, VAACC has reached thousands through its interactive programs and events.

Mission: To collect, preserve, interpret, inform, and celebrate Virginia’s African American history, culture, and community and to educate the public about African American contributions in all areas of endeavor.

Overview: Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Programming is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of all historical and cultural programs for the VAACC, including events, artistic performances, and exhibits, ensuring their relevance and historical accuracy. The Director of Programming will provide critical mission direction and support for high quality educational engagement and public programs both in-person and virtual. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to compose an annual budget & programming calendar in alignment with VAACC’s mission, strategically design core programming, and manage all processes related to these functions. This role works hand-in-hand with the Executive Director in implementing a variety of strategies, projects, and partnerships to assist in the development phase of the Cultural Center.

Job Duties

Responsibilities:
• Know the mission and vision of VAACC and strategically understand how programs & events should be incorporated into the overall planning of the Cultural Center.
• Develop the foundation for the Cultural Center’s educational plan. This will include implementing pilot programs and developing key educational relationships.
• Design, plan, implement, and evaluate programs for all age demographics.
• Create and maintain annual program calendar & budget.
• Manage/oversee programs associated with established partners.
• Cultivate partnerships with universities and other nonprofits that will enhance the work of the Cultural Center
• Establish and manage a university- level internship program.
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Skills Required

Qualifications:
• Minimum of four (4) year college degree in a related field; master’s preferred
• At least five (5) years of experience in a nonprofit setting, working directly with program development, management, and evaluation
• Experience working in public programming and a passion for working with all age demographics from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills; research and data gathering skills
• Ability to read and interpret documents, basic negotiation skills
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Presentation/public speaking skills
• Ability to work independently and as a team player
• Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and ability to be a self-starter
• Proven ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Working knowledge of Microsoft office and adobe professional suites
• Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
• High integrity; an enthusiasm and tenacity to make things happen

Work Schedule

Additional Information:
Hours: Standard business hours
9:00am – 5:00pm
Hours may vary based on operational needs
Must be available to work evenings and
weekends in coordination with
programming.
