Position: Director of Finance
Location:  Administrative Office, 195 Lambs Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22901
Position Status: Full-time, Exempt
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Compensation Type: Salary
Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000
Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia offers a lineup of nationally recognized programs that address today’s most pressing youth issues. With six locations across Albemarle, Charlottesville, Madison, and Orange, our Clubs serve more than 2,000 kids annually, providing after school and summer programs for children and teens. Our mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible members of the communities in which they live.
The Director of Finance plays a vital role in stewarding financial resources to support our important mission. Reporting to and collaborating with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this role will manage the organization’s daily financial activities to ensure accuracy and compliance with the organization’s accounting policies, generally accepted accounting standards, and contractual requirements. The Director of Finance has the unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the organization by identifying and implementing operational improvements, organizing training for staff on financial procedures, and thinking strategically about the organization’s long-term financial stability.

 

Job Duties

  • Ensures accurate day-to-day finance activities and monthly reconciliation of revenue and expenses, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, prepaid entries, and monthly and year-end close
  • Leads an annual review of the organization’s standard finance operating procedures to ensure the integrity, accuracy, compliance, and usefulness of financial information and reporting by reviewing and updating the organization’s financial operating procedures

  • Participates as an active member in the Audit Committee, Finance Committee, and Investment Committee and maintains strong working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Prepares, analyzes, and reviews financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and presents information at volunteer or unit board meetings
  • Collaborates with the CFO and finance department to develop strategies to assess, manage, and minimize any financial risks and to maximize financial opportunities
  • Develops financial forecasts and reconciles forecasts to actual results
  • Creates and supports opportunities, systems, and expectations that promote an organizational culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Skills Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and not-for-profit accounting principles
  • Prior experience managing a team is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and experience of accounting practices, processes, and procedures of non-profit organizations
  • Ability to communicate financial data to a diverse group of people
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills, including the ability to cultivate relationships and trust with staff, leadership, board members, committee members, and vendors.
  • Ability to be a “big-picture thinker” while remaining attentive to detail
  • Proficient in Excel and various accounting applications
  • Commitment to the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs

Additional Info

Education and Certifications:
  • 3-4 years of experience in finance or accounting
  • 1-2 years in not for profit finance preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related degree or equivalent work experience
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:
  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading
  • Ability to be effective in an environment with varying levels of noise throughout the day
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for up to 75% of the work day
