Overview
On behalf of our client, we are seeking a full-time Director of Development (DoD) who provides strategic and operational leadership for the process by which the James River Association (JRA) identifies, cultivates, solicits, recognizes, and stewards prospects and donors. The DoD has fundraising experience managing a portfolio of individuals, foundations, and corporate relationships that raises resources to sustain and grow the mission. Manages two staff on the Development team and reports directly to the Vice President, Development.
Founded in 1976, the James River Association (JRA) is the oldest and largest river conservation group in Virginia, and the only organization solely dedicated to protecting and restoring America’s Founding River, the James River. JRA’s mission is to be the guardian of the James River – to provide a voice for the river and take action to promote conservation and responsible stewardship of its natural resources. To accomplish our mission, JRA’s two strategic goals include: 1) Achieving a fully healthy James River; and 2) Helping communities within the watershed realize the benefits from a healthy James River and support protecting it.

Job Duties
Summary of Job Responsibilities and Requirements
• In partnership with the VP of Development, create and implement an Annual Development Plan and strategies to raise unrestricted funding to meet the annual budget as well as restricted funding initiatives.
• In partnership with the Development and Marketing Coordinator and Database Specialist create and implement an Annual Stewardship Plan that includes donor events, awareness building gatherings (festivals, tabling) and Communications Calendar (Annual Fund appeals, Development promotional content, Annual Impact Report)
• Identify donor and prospect projections to meet and exceed Development/Assets budget through Board of Directors, Individual Donors, Foundations, Corporations, Cause Marketing, and Planned Gifts.
• In concert with the VP of Development and VP of Finance, develop the Annual FY Budget and establish projections to meet that budget through unrestricted contributions from board, individuals, foundations, corporations (sponsorships and cause-marketing), and planned gifts.
• Develop and execute solicitation and stewardship strategies for an assigned portfolio of 75-100 mid-level donors and corporate partnerships.
• Oversee the Development Coordinator in the design of creative direct mail appeals targeting introductory gifts, annual gifts, pledges, monthly gifts, lapsed gifts, and planned gifts.
• Manage the Development Coordinator as s/he creates and fully executes all aspects of JRA fundraising, stewardship and awareness events, festivals that align with JRA’s mission and as identified in the Stewardship and Communications Plan.
• Oversee the Development Coordinator in the management of timely printed, email, and social media communications to donors and prospects e.g.- case for support and impact of gifts.
• Oversee Database Specialist in the management of JRA’s CRM (Salesforce – Nonprofit Success Pack) to include, record management and reporting to include metrics, dashboards and analysis.

Skills Required
Key Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities
• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced professional certifications a plus
• Minimum seven years of development experience required, preferably in an environmental related non-profit. Direct experience as front line MGO securing major gifts, cultivating individual donors and increasing support from existing donors.
• Experience working with Corporate Partners, developing sponsorship packets and presentations to engage Sponsorships, Annual Donations, and Cause-Marketing Relationship and ensure their priorities align well with JRAs mission.
• Technical proficiency in a variety of computer applications (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, and data management/CRM systems.
• Excellent writing and public speaking ability in order to communicate powerfully.
• Strategic and analytic capabilities to use qualitative and analytical capabilities to use.
• A strong commitment to and understanding of donor recognition and stewardship.
• Experience in hiring, supervision, assessment, and training of staff.
• High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, sincere affinity for the mission, flexibility, teamwork and attention to detail; high degree of initiative.
• Is entrepreneurial. Has the communication, financial and technical skills needed to effectively communicate and implement the development plan.
• Successfully builds relationships by understanding organization and department goals and effectively communicating.
• Promotes and adheres to company’s mission, vision and values; policies and applicable laws in a fair and equitable manner.
• Represents the organization in a professional manner to all donors, vendors, and internal staff.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
