Description

The Director of Development & Community Relations is responsible for shaping and leading a comprehensive, mission-based fundraising and marketing/public relations/community relations program to sustain and support the Arc of the Piedmont.

The Director of Development & Community Relations works closely with the Executive Director, Board and staff to secure funds for the annual operations budget, conduct major gift campaigns, further public awareness of The Arc, and implement special projects. The Director of Development & Community Relations is the primary media contact for the organization and works strategically to devise and implement proactive media outreach efforts and marketing strategies to increase awareness of The Arc of the Piedmont. This position works with all areas of The Arc of the Piedmont to deliver its message to the media, members and other constituents. This is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Executive Director.

Job Duties

• Plan and implement a comprehensive development plan to meet budget needs and provide management level leadership to ensure a diverse revenue stream, including major gifts, corporate support (both cash and in-kind), foundation grants and individual donors including planned giving.

• Envision and set strategy and timing for fundraising events including the Santa Run, Golf Tournament, and Annual Gala, along with focused events to publicize and raise funds for The Arc Studio and other Arc of the Piedmont programs.

• Work with the Leadership Team, Committees, and Board of Directors to position the organization and its programs to maximize fund development opportunities. Support the Executive Director in identifying and cultivating Board and Committee members who support the Arc of the Piedmont financially and through their contacts and expertise.

• Identify, cultivate and solicits in-kind and cash contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations and government sources.

• Build and sustain The Arc’s relationships with donors, including one-on-one relationships.

• Create and implement new fundraising vehicles, such as planned giving campaigns, special events, capital campaign funds and corporate sponsorship opportunities.

• Research areas of new grant resources, prepare and submit proposals.

• Develop, create, and oversee comprehensive marketing strategy for the Arc of the Piedmont, including effective social media campaigns, digital marketing, traditional media advertising (print, radio, television, out-of-home). Create and manage marketing and development expense and revenue budgets each fiscal year, and maintain accurate records of all marketing- and fundraising-related expenses and revenue.

• Develop, create and oversee public relations strategy, cultivating press interest in and coverage of Arc of the Piedmont programs. Serve as the public relations spokesperson for the Arc of the Piedmont, providing an informed, cohesive viewpoint that represents the Arc of the Piedmont mission.

• Oversee all publications (brochures, mailings, annual report) and the “public face” of the Arc of the Piedmont, including the website, social media platforms and other assets/outlets as needed.

• Manage the development and implementation of a comprehensive donor/fundraising database; maintain regular communications with potential and existing donors.

• Provide up-to-date reporting on fundraising; track and follow up all potential and actual donors; and evaluate the effectiveness of fundraising initiatives. Prepare reports for grant foundations on projects they have funded and updates to the Board and Development Committee on those grants.

• Attend Board of Directors meetings as well as relevant Board Committee meetings including the Development Committee, Gala Committee, and other Committees as needed. Work with the Executive Director to recruit Committee members to create and sustain vital community and fundraising connections.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Fundraising strategy for the Arc of the Piedmont including setting and meeting fundraising goals.
• Marketing and communications strategy for the Arc of the Piedmont including all media.
• Act as the primary point of contact for donors, media, and other fundraising/marketing-related constituents of the Arc of the Piedmont.
• Coordinate all fundraising events for the Arc of the Piedmont.
• Oversee volunteers and committee members to plan fundraising events for the Arc of the Piedmont.

Skills Required

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
• Comprehensive knowledge of non-profit development, marketing and public relations
• Considerable knowledge of donor and grant research, donor relations and donor development
• Interest in and commitment to the work of The Arc
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Verified ability to motivate volunteers and Board members to reach development goals
• Ability to meet deadlines and develop project timelines
• Readiness to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
• Energetic and creative attitude
• Strong database and digital skills; significant experience in social media strategy, placement and content
• Experience with content creation tools a plus
• Ability to work comfortably as a member of a flexible team

Work Schedule

This position is in-person in Charlottesville, VA.

Additional Info

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in related field of communications, marketing, non-profit management.
• At least two years of leadership experience in non-profit fundraising and marketing, public relations, development, donor relations and/or fundraising.
• Documented success in securing gifts from individual donors, foundations and corporations.
• Collaborative approach and the ability to work well both individually and with teams across the organization is a must.
• Commitment to the mission and goals of the Arc of the Piedmont, to support, engage and provide community integration for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
