Description
The Director of Development manages all private fundraising programs for Habitat, including: annual giving, major gifts, and planned giving. The incumbent works to foster and support a strong culture of philanthropy across the affiliate, while leading a high-performing team of 2 FTEs to achieve ambitious annual and long-term philanthropic goals. The Director works in close partnership with the CAO to make data-driven recommendations and decisions about Habitat’s future fundraising plans, programs, and resources, and is expected to play a key role in the affiliate’s next capital campaign.
Job Duties
– Direct and oversee Habitat’s private fundraising initiatives, including annual campaigns, major gifts, and planned giving.
– Craft strategies and plans for prospect cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, carefully balancing donor interest with Habitat’s need for a sustainable portfolio of unrestricted and restricted funds.
– Design effective moves management structures and strategies to assist executive leadership and development staff manage their respective donor portfolios, while also carrying a portfolio of major and planned giving donors.
– Investigate new fundraising programming to take best advantage of the current funding landscape and future trends, as well as Habitat’s donor demographics and volunteer engagement.
– Provide program, spending, and staffing recommendations to support Habitat’s ambitious resource development.
– Lead day-to-day development operations, including active, direct management of a small, but highly experienced team.
– Maintain knowledge of fundraising regulations, fundraising database software, as well as trends and best practices in fundraising strategy.
– Ensure accurate, timely stewardship and maintenance of up-to-date donor records.
– Support colleagues across the affiliate in fundraising and adjacent/related activities, including sponsorship efforts..
– Contribute to the life of the affiliate through active participation in standing meetings, attending events, and serving as a visible member of the Advancement team within the broader community.
Skills Required
The Director of Development is a results-driven professional with 3 years or more of progressive leadership experience in non-profit fundraising or an equivalent setting, and will hold at least a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of all aspects of resource development, as well as knowledge of best practices across the sector, and will also have/be:
– Experience providing direction for donor-centered fundraising programs
– Commitment to program ownership and accountability, while remaining flexible and open to continuous improvement, co-creation, and changing course, as needed
– Demonstrated experience translating relationship building into major gift success
– Knowledge of, and ability to implement, successful moves management practices
– Ability to multitask, plan, organize, and implement multiple projects and meet deadlines
– Skilled executive communicator, with strong written, verbal, and public presentation abilities
– Ability to clearly present complex and nuanced subject matter to a wide array of audiences
– Previous capital campaign experience
– Tact and diplomacy, as well as mature judgement
– Self-awareness and deep authenticity

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
– Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
– Ability and willingness to travel locally and regionally, as needed.
– Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Work Schedule
This is an in-person position located in Charlottesville, VA. The typical schedule is Monday thru Friday, 9a-5p with some evenings, weekends, and attendance of special events.
