Located in the Jefferson School City Center, The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center’s mission is to honor and preserve the rich heritage and legacy of the African-American community of Charlottesville-Albemarle, Virginia and to promote a greater appreciation for, and understanding of, the contributions of African Americans and peoples of the Diaspora locally, nationally and globally.

The Director of Development will play a crucial role in advancing the mission and objectives of JSAAHC by developing and implementing a comprehensive major gift plan. This involves identifying potential major gift prospects, conducting thorough analyses to gauge their propensity, capacity, and enthusiasm to give, and gathering relevant data to identify the most promising candidates for the major gifts program.

Location: Charlottesville, VA or Remote. Preference for candidates who live in Charlottesville.

Compensation: $80-100K per year. The salary listed is one component of the total compensation package for employees.

Job Duties

Responsibilities:

Identify potential major gift prospects, conducting thorough analyses to gauge their propensity, capacity, and enthusiasm to give, and gathering relevant data to identify the most promising candidates for the major gifts program.
Build and manage a portfolio of qualified relationships, employing a moves management approach with customized cultivation strategies for each donor. This portfolio will focus on strategically advancing priorities such as The Heritage Fund, Planned Giving, and endowment.
Work alongside the development staff, assisting in composing letters, compiling invitation lists, securing sponsors, participating in events, and engaging featured program participants while working towards annual fundraising goals, including both annual and capital campaigns.

Skills Required

Preferred qualifications:

Must have capital campaign experience.
Demonstrated history of securing major gifts over three or more years while working a growing organization.
A proven fundraising track record, as well as possible history in finance, sales, and marketing.
A strong familiarity and/or proven track record of working with the Charlottesville philanthropic community.
