The Community Climate Collaborative (C3), a non-profit organization based in Charlottesville, VA, is seeking a dynamic, engaging, highly-motivated full-time Director of Development to support our growing organization. 

C3 believes the power to fight climate change resides within our communities. Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, C3 works with businesses, residents, schools, nonprofits, and local governments to catalyze climate action at the community level through evidence-based planning, collaboration, programs, and advocacy which directly reduce climate pollution and elevate climate leadership. C3 recognizes that an equitable transition to a clean economy and a sustainable future means addressing the needs of all members of our community. This position is a key component of our organization.

Overview

The Director of Development takes primary responsibility for all aspects of revenue generation for the organization and will be supported by the Executive Director, staff, and an active, working Board of Directors which is willing to help advance key initiatives as C3 grows. Reports To

This position reports directly to the Executive Director. Additionally, this role requires coordination of content with all team members, as well as, the C3 Board of Directors.

Job Duties

Foundation Fundraising

  • Plan, manage, and execute a foundation fundraising strategy to meet C3’s annual budget expectations including drafting proposal narrative, budgets, and appropriate collateral materials for each grant opportunity providing adequate time for internal review and timely submission of grant proposals, agreements, and reports
  • Work with C3 team members, to draft and execute grant proposals and collaborate to ensure that all grant proposal objectives and requirements are met
  • Engage with C3 team members to identify programs and special projects for foundation proposals
  • Research new foundation grant funding cycles and requirements to increase the pool of potential foundation funding sources
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, schedule site visits and cultivation meetings with current and new foundation representatives to engage them in the mission and work of C3
  • Manage and execute timely reports to foundation funders in keeping with their grant requirements

Individual Fundraising

  • Responsible for scheduling and holding regular face to face visits with individuals to identify and cultivate their philanthropic interest in the mission, vision, and work of C3, solicit for annual or multi-year support and steward their giving
  • Identify opportunities to develop partnerships with individual supporters of C3, allowing their individual expertise to help advance C3’s mission
  • Provide prospects with timely and appropriate follow up after each visit and steward gifts through various means of acknowledgement
  • Design, implement, and maintain a recurring donor program

Corporate Giving and Sponsorships 

  • Manage corporate fundraising strategy to meet the annual corporate funding/sponsorship needs for C3 programing as prescribed in C3’s budget
  • Responsible for securing corporate sponsorships for special events as assigned in collaboration with C3 team members
  • Create and regularly update the sponsorship opportunities document in collaboration with C3 team members or based on upcoming event or program opportunities
  • Provide corporate giving prospects and donors with timely and appropriate follow up materials post solicitation and/or visit
  • Ensure that sponsors receive timely communication to schedule and manage sponsorship benefits, and steward gifts through various means of acknowledgement

Special Events

  • Manage strategy, development, and execution of C3 fundraising events as assigned by the Executive Director
  • Coordinate event publicity, including public relations, advertising, and collateral materials
  • Solicit in-kind marketing sponsorships from local media to support events
  • Manage and coordinate the successful solicitation sponsors in coordination with C3 team members and volunteers to expand sponsorship activity and fulfillment
  • Organize annual donor stewardship events in coordination with the Executive Director, Board, and team members
  • Send thank you notes and/or appropriate follow up to all sponsors and donors in a timely manner

Other Development Activities

  • Capture timely and complete details of fundraising activity into C3’s database
  • Responsible for drafting newsletter copy, regular articles, updates, invitation copy, etc. related to fundraising, as well as reviewing written drafts from members of the C3 team
  • Represent C3 at community functions and networking events
  • Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Skills Required

Successful candidates will have at least 3-5 years of fundraising experience, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Excellent and efficient writing skills are a must. We seek an individual who shares our strong enthusiasm for the mission of C3 and who relates well with a variety of audiences. This role requires a responsive, action-oriented fundraiser who can operate both independently and as a collaborative team member, within a fast-paced work environment. Other requirements include strong computer skills including proficiency with G-Suite and Microsoft PowerPoint.

Preferred: Demonstrated success in developing relationships and successfully soliciting and closing gifts from individuals, foundations, businesses, and organizations is preferred, as is successfully working with volunteers to manage and implement both large and small-scale special events. Experience with donor database integration and implementation, and some background in marketing is a plus.
