The Community Climate Collaborative (C3) is a non-profit organization serving Albemarle County, Charlottesville, and Richmond, VA. C3 believes the power to fight climate change resides within our communities. C3 works with businesses, residents, schools, nonprofits, and local governments to catalyze climate action at the community level through evidence-based planning, collaboration, programs, and advocacy which directly reduce climate pollution and elevate climate leadership. Overview

C3 is seeking a visionary and highly motivated, full-time Director of Communications. The Director of Communications leads one of the key components of our organization, and the successful candidate will join a highly impactful team at a critical juncture. C3 has served the City of Charlottesville and County of Albemarle for six years and will grow to serve the City of Richmond this fall. The Director of Communications will lead our communications transition from a single-city focus to a multi-city strategy and has the opportunity to help shape the long-term communications vision for the organization.

An ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about using effective communications to drive brand awareness, behavior change, engagement, and advocacy for maximum impact. This person is an ambitious, agile, team player who has excellent interpersonal and written communication. This person should enjoy being strategic, creative, and mission-driven.

Reports To

This position reports to the Executive Director. Additionally, this role will work collaboratively with all team members to plan and execute campaigns, facilitate community engagement, and influence the conversation surrounding community-focused solutions to climate change.

Job Duties

Responsibilities

●  Lead effective overall climate communications strategy to engage diverse audiences, including policymakers, media outlets, and the general public

●  Develop a yearly comprehensive Communication and Marketing Plan

●  Create compelling/story-based content to support C3’s brand, campaigns, and outreach efforts

●  Elevate C3’s brand identity and core messaging

●  Track and analyze the impact of communication efforts, including website traffic, social

media engagement, and media mentions, to evaluate effectiveness and inform future

strategies

●  Follow current trends, scientific findings, public discourse, best practices, and policy

developments to inform communication efforts and identify opportunities for proactive

messaging and/or timely response

●  Develop and maintain C3’s website

●  Lead the publication of internal and guest blogs

●  Support policy advocacy and campaigns across C3 channels

●  Lead press relations including relationship management, press release content generation,

and facilitating interviews with C3 staff

●  Serve as spokesperson, as needed

●  Train staff members on media relations

●  Manage/oversee relationships with outside marketing firms and other service providers

●  Support in-person and virtual events and workshops to promote climate awareness,

recognition, and education

●  Position C3 staff as subject matter experts

Skills Required

Organizational Leadership: Work C3 leadership to develop and implement processes and policies that promote the overall health and mission of the organization. Attend local, state, or national conferences to learn and share best practices.

Strategic Impact: Think proactively and develop communications that can influence and shape the larger climate conversation.

Storytelling: Use clear, consistent, compelling storytelling that centers the communities with whom we work so that climate action and leadership become infectious.

Supervision and Collaboration: Provide oversight while embracing a service mindset.

 

Qualifications Required:

●  5 of years experience in communications or related field

●  Passion for climate action and social justice and a commitment to action

●  Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex

information into accessible and engaging content

●  Demonstrated success in crafting compelling messages for different target audiences

●  Proficiency in using social media platforms, content management systems, and digital

analytics tools

●  Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment,

managing multiple tasks, and deadlines

●  Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to critically evaluate information from

diverse sources

Preferred:

●  Knowledge of pro-climate behaviors, climate science, policy, and related social justice issues

●  Familiarity with Squarespace CMS, graphic design tools (e.g. Canva), and video editing software is a plus

●  Interest in and proven ability to work in a diverse and interdisciplinary team

Work Schedule

9-5 M-F. Some weekend and evening events.

Compensation & Benefits

●  Salary range is $70,000 – $90,000 depending on experience
