POSITION: Director | Advancement & Communications

LOCATION: Hybrid work environment based at CNE’s Charlottesville office, working with stakeholders across Virginia.

SALARY: Full-time, salaried position with a hiring range of $88,550-$104,225 and a robust benefits package (see below).

 

Position Overview

The Director of Advancement & Communications is an intentional thought partner in the executive leadership team at CNE.  Primarily a development and fundraising professional, this role will focus on leading a comprehensive program to enhance CNE’s sustainable resources, including engagement of current and potential funder relationships, CNE members, external communications, and events. This role will develop and implement the strategic advancement plan, aligned with financial imperatives and organizational goals resulting from CNE’s strategic plan.

Ideal Candidate

A successful Director at CNE is a thought partner, working closely with the Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships and Learning & Membership, the Chief of Staff, the Director of Learning & Membership, and the Executive Director, and is well-versed in revenue generation in the nonprofit sector.  The candidate will be an expert leader and communicator, and finds connection to the mission in the daily work.  A strategic leader at CNE, the candidate will be capable of establishing the fundamentals for a growth-focused, professional advancement program to take CNE to the next level of resource development required for sustained and expanded program delivery to its membership. Demonstrated and proven expertise cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations are necessity for success.  This person will provide leadership in partnerships with each of these contributors to CNE’s mission and will work in collaboration with the Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships and Learning & Membership.  The successful candidate will possess compelling leadership and interpersonal skills that promote collaboration and inclusion.  This incumbent will acquire grant funding through effective writing, marketing, and promoting the organization’s mission and capabilities. This individual will be conversant in CNE’s programs and offerings and, working closely with the Learning and Membership team, will offer technical assistance and training as part of their portfolio.

Fundamentally, this individual will understand and value equity as an organizational operating principle and be committed to continued learning on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Managerial skills and strong relationship building skills, along with a team mentality that supports building of community, collaboration, and unity of effort are essential.

Position responsibilities and expectations:

  • Manage a portfolio of current and previous donors, new prospects, and high-level prospects and donors capable of giving at major gift levels
  • Meet or exceed annual fundraising goal and support CNE’s sustainability by researching and pursuing new funding opportunities
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Deputy Director of Strategic Partnerships and Learning & Membership and the Learning & Membership team
  • Effectively manage a small team and consultants as needed to build out advancement capacity
  • Active engagement, thought leadership, and partnership with the Executive Director in the execution of CNE’s capital campaign, We Build Community and implementation of strategic goals
  • Leverage relationships with CNE Board, executive team and staff to increase and deepen annual giving and maintain an engaged membership
  • Develop a targeted and strategic approach to annual giving, by cultivating and stewarding interest and involvement in the social impact sector
  • Fulfill CNE’s Philanthropy Day annual fundraising and community engagement event, including event sponsorship and event management to create a mission-centered activity with a financial return on investment
  • Project manage all aspects of the Advancement function from start to finish including providing organization-wide leadership in the work from full project to individual task.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and the Learning & Membership Team, lead the communications function at CNE.
  • Take a lead role in the grant application process, with the collaboration and support of other team members and grant writers.
  • Rethink strategy and revise CNE’s Corporate Donor Program, leveraging opportunities for corporate financial support and employee engagement around CNE’s 7 Actionable Principles for a Strong Social Sector.
  • Build a proactive advancement and cross-organizational communication plan, including the writing and editing of development-marketing materials for print, e-newsletters, and social media.
  • Ensure that CNE’s culture of appreciation, inclusion, integrity, and respect are consistently demonstrated.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Preferred qualifications for this role:

  • Progressive work experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in business or communications
  • Considerable experience in fundraising, sales, marketing, or other revenue generating capacity in nonprofits, foundations or related environments. Experience as an executive director is helpful.
  • Considerable experience managing others, including selecting and assessing vendors and consultants
  • Demonstrated communications experience including writing, public speaking, and storytelling
  • Solid background in finance, budgeting, graphic design and social media applications, and project management

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, salaried position with a hiring range of $88,550 to $104,225. CNE offers a robust employee benefits package, including 100% of employee health insurance coverage paid, the opportunity to participate in a 403(b) plan with employer match.  Flexible, hybrid work along with 160 PTO hours available in the first year of employment plus ~17 paid holidays. This role will include opportunities for professional development and growth.
