The College Foundation of the University of Virginia, which exists to support the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, is conducting a search for a Development Officer.


The Development Officer is a front-line fundraiser and is part of an experienced fundraising team that generates philanthropic support for the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the largest school at the University of Virginia.


The Development Officer will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership annual fund donors ($2,500+ annually). The Development Officer will manage a portfolio in designated cities and will also assist in efforts to renew and solicit increased annual gifts from alumni all over the country.


The successful candidate will have at least two years of demonstrated success in fundraising or a related field and have confidence in asking for 4-and-5-figure gifts and pledges. This position works collaboratively with colleagues at the College Foundation and across the University to achieve the College of Arts & Sciences’ annual and long-range fundraising priorities. The position may also involve volunteer management.


The successful candidate will possess a high degree of initiative, flexibility and will have the skills to shape and be shaped by evolving fundraising initiatives. The successful candidate will possess a high degree of personal integrity and have the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details; experience using data to evaluate and plan is essential. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and skillfully, and with an appreciation for high standards.

Work Qualifications

Degree required: Bachelor’s Degree is required.

Minimal level of relevant experience: Preference for at least 2 years of fundraising experience that includes leadership annual fund gift fundraising. Consideration may be given to candidates with at least 2 years of experience in a position with transferable skills.



  • A distinguished professional and team player who can be successful while managing complex relationships.
  • High personal standards are required, including excellent organizational, written and oral skills.  An ability to work cooperatively with various groups of people is also required.
  • The successful candidate should enjoy working with people, especially donors, and work well under pressure. She/he should also have demonstrated the ability to manage multiple and complex projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities and needs.
  • Strategic and goal-oriented, knowledgeable about fundraising and ideally experienced with higher education fundraising.
  • The ability to travel is required.  Some evening and weekend work is required.
  • This position requires knowledge of basic computer skills and programs, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
