Launched in 1993, the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital (DCEFF) is the largest and longest-running showcase for environmental films in the United States. Each March, our signature Festival presents more than 100 documentary, narrative, and short films from around the world in venues across greater Washington, D.C. Alongside the screenings, we offer panels and special events featuring filmmakers, subject matter experts, and other invited guests to foster dialogue and deepen engagement.

We also offer a full slate of year-round programming, including our signature Youth Program for D.C. public and charter school students and specialty programs, such as a curated showcase of virtual-reality (VR) films. Additionally, we make more than 150 films available online through our Watch Now webpage. In 2017, we were honored with the D.C. Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in Creative Industries. This year’s Festival will take place from March 14 – 24, 2019.

Job Summary

The Development Manager plays a vital role in helping DCEFF realize its fundraising goals, with special emphasis on event planning and membership. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development Manager is responsible for organizing, executing, and coordinating all aspects of fundraising and donor cultivation and stewardship events, including the annual Embassy Benefit Reception and smaller receptions. He/she/they will also spearhead the Friends of the Festival membership program, as well as manage the donor database and development calendar, conduct prospect research, and contribute substantially to all individual and institutional giving activities. A key member of the growing development team, the Development Manager will additionally work with a part-time Development Assistant to ensure data integrity and strengthen donor relations. This full-time position is based in Washington, D.C.

Job Duties


Primary responsibilities for this position include planning and executing impeccable development events within a robust moves management framework; building, managing, and growing a relatively new membership program ($50 – $2,500 levels); tracking and monitoring donor and grant cycles; maintaining donor records and producing timely donor acknowledgments; helping to identify and engage new individual and institutional funding prospects; collaborating with colleagues on the development team and across the organization to create and execute annual giving campaigns; drafting and editing grant and sponsorship proposals, reports, and collateral; and partnering with colleagues on the development team to fulfill all contributed revenue and development strategy goals.

Donor Event Management (45%)

Coordinate planning and execution of one major fundraising event and Festival receptions (approximately 10 receptions in 2019): Manage invitation lists and all printed and digital materials; communicate with Festival speakers and partners; draft talking points; prepare schedules and run of shows; manage external vendors; coordinate with PR/communications; provide text and photos for website; provide on-site management; coordinate with all staff, Board members, and esteemed guests; track and plan expenditures.

Individual Giving (30%)

Manage Friends of the Festival membership program; assist Friends, Board, and Advisory Council with reservations during Festival; coordinate and draft donor solicitations and acknowledgments in print and e-mail form; collaborate on creating and executing multi-channel annual giving campaigns and other forms of development communications.

Foundation, Corporate, and Government Funding (10%)

Help draft and edit letters of inquiry/intent, proposals, reports, and other grant and sponsorship materials; track institutional funder correspondence and deadlines; help maintain and fulfill funder/sponsor deliverables; research new prospective funding sources; stay informed of changes in funding requirements and publications in current funding sources.

Donor Information, Gift Management, and Analysis (5%)

Manage donor database, including setting guidelines, updating information, and reviewing entries by staff; prepare donor lists for printed annual program guide and website; analyze and report on fundraising performance; update income projections and actuals on a quarterly basis.

Board of Directors and Advisory Council (5%)

With Director of Development, provide high-level support for Board of Directors, Development Committee, and Advisory Council; prepare materials for recurring meetings and donor cultivation activities.

Other Duties (5%)

Help staff/support all development functions and other Festival events as needed; provide administrative and other support to the Director of Development as requested.


Skills Required


We welcome applications from strategic, resourceful, highly organized, and detail-oriented development professionals with a dual passion for film/media arts and the environment.

Successful candidates will also possess the following:

  • At least two (2) to four (4) years of full-time professional experience in a development role, preferably in an arts or environmental nonprofit setting
  • Demonstrated success at managing special events for diverse constituencies
  • Experience with managing event budgets and working with multiple vendors, contacts, and venues
  • Excellent project and time management skills with attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to prioritize tasks, responsibilities, and deadlines
  • Strong commitment to implementation and follow-through and a clear command of logistical thinking
  • Experience with coordinating and fulfilling benefits for donors across a wide range of giving levels
  • Strong proficiency in G Suite, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Suite; nonprofit CRMs, including eTapestry; prospect research tools; and online research tools
  • Ability to organize donor and financial data and produce calendars and reports
  • Excellent research, writing, editing, and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of best practices for prospect identification and donor relationship-building, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally and collegially with colleagues, funders, and other diverse stakeholders
  • Willingness to staff and contribute to departmental and organizational initiatives and events as they arise
  • Creativity, adaptability, and a sense of humor
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) required; graduate degree preferred
