CIMA Consulting: Development Consultant/Senior Consultant

CIMA Consulting is growing again! If you have experience as a grant writer or nonprofit leader, we’d love to hear from you! We are currently 100% remote but look forward to a hybrid work arrangement in the months ahead. While most of our team is Charlottesville based, we are open to remote work and offer full- and part-time options.

About CIMA

CIMA is a consulting firm in Charlottesville, VA, providing clients with strategic insight and support through institutional fundraising (grant writing) and a range of other deliverables. Our team — nine consultants and growing! — works on behalf of nonprofit organizations across the country, furthering their organizational capacity via fundraising, business development, and organizational design. Our clients are socially conscious organizations seeking a thoughtful, agile, results-oriented firm to assist them in achieving their mission.

Our current portfolio includes these and other nonprofit clients:

  • A Black-led, start-up nonprofit news organization.
  • A national environmental organization, harnessing science and law to protect biodiversity on our planet.
  • A community organization working to prevent juvenile crime and incarceration through legal education, leadership training, and one-on-one mentoring.

About the Development Consultant/Senior Consultant Role

We are currently hiring a full-time consultant/senior consultant to contribute immediately to at least two client engagements, in close collaboration with other CIMA consultants. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the direction of two client engagements. This includes strategic management and oversight of all client activities, including:
    • Providing top-tier project management, becoming a trusted strategic partner for our clients’ senior staff.
    • Writing compelling narratives for letters of inquiry, proposals, and other collateral; working with clients to understand their organization and desired voice.
    • Identifying funding opportunities through online research, phone calls, and email follow-up.
    • Ensuring CIMA meets goals and client expectations through careful internal tracking of progress, application deadlines, and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinating with one or more CIMA team members for each client engagement to ensure that we continually exceed our clients’ expectations.
  • Organizing and evaluating data for clients and for CIMA.
  • Contributing to the growth and strategic direction of CIMA Consulting.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree with at least three years of experience in grant-writing and/or other development functions.
  • Proven success in a client-facing project or account management role, and/or a track record of relationship building and accountability.
  • A demonstrated appreciation for/commitment to the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven ability to organize and synthesize large amounts of information into compelling written collateral on deadline.
  • Experience using standard office software/platforms (Excel, Drive, Airtable, etc.).
  • Skill in organizing and drawing conclusions from data (preferred but not required).

Qualities we consider essential for CIMA team members:

  • Extremely organized and self-motivated, able to prioritize multiple deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Willing to take direction and ask thoughtful questions, then work independently to complete tasks
  • Keen writing, editing, and proofreading skills, and a love of good writing
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, intellectual environment, with the feel of a start-up; willingness to listen, and collaborate, and seize upon opportunities for growth and change.
  • Flexibility, dedication, and the ability to laugh at one’s self (and others, but only in a nice way)

Compensation based on experience. Expected salary range: $60-75,000+ annually + health benefits for full-time employees.

About Our Team

CIMA is dedicated to supporting causes that matter. Our team members come from varied professional backgrounds, but we share common traits: the desire to over-deliver for our clients; a talent for clear and compelling writing; and a generous spirit toward clients and colleagues. We work hard and smart, but we also have fun and value our time away from work to recharge. We have passionate debates about punctuation, local pastries, and the right time to plant tomatoes.

Want to apply but not sure if you’d be the right fit? If we sound like the right place for you, we want to hear from you. There is no ‘perfect’ candidate. Everyone brings something different to the team and those differences make us better.

Our goal is to be a company that is representative of the people that we and our nonprofit clients serve. We encourage all interested applicants to apply, including but not limited to members of the LGBTQIA+ community, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), and individuals with disabilities. CIMA does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to apply@cima.consulting for consideration. Resumes without cover letters will not be considered. We look forward to hearing from you!
