Description

The Curatorial Assistant supports the Curator of Exhibitions and the Curatorial Department by providing general administrative support. The position is responsible for editorial duties within the department and should have strong editorial experience. He/she assists the Curatorial Department with exhibition preparation—which may include supporting the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions as needed—and acts as the liaison with other departments to ensure the timely production of materials associated with exhibitions and exhibition-related programming. He/she manages, in consultation with the Curator, Curatorial Interns through the University Museums Internship Program. The Curatorial Assistant is also responsible for coordinating exhibition-related grants and for grant reporting within the department.

Job Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility 1.1.: Assist Curator and Curatorial Department with exhibition and collection-related activities, Level of Importance: High, 25%
    • Duties:
      • Responsible for administrative duties in the Curatorial Department and for Curator of Exhibitions, including travel expense tracking and reconciliation, booking travel for Curator, and T&E card reconciliation.
      • Participate in making arrangements for public programs related to exhibitions
      • Supports installation and deinstallation of exhibitions as needed.
  • Responsibility 2.1: Responsible for all editorial duties within the department, 25%
    • Duties:
      • Manage label preparation. Manage editing processes, design, fabricate, and install wall text and didactics for exhibitions.
      • Manage production process for any externally printed exhibition materials, including wall-mounted vinyl.
      • Maintain exhibition-related materials and ensure that appropriate museum staff have access to accurate and current information
  • Responsibility 3.1: Grant Coordination, 15%
    • Duties:
      • Manage application process for exhibition-related grants: work with Development department to assemble grant components, proofread materials, ensure timely application, and submit grants.
      • Work with Office of Sponsored programs to submit federally funded grants
      • Manage grant reporting process for awarded grants
  • Responsibility 4.1: Liaison with other departments regarding exhibition materials, Level of Importance: High, 15%
    • Duties:
      • Work with publications designers, curators, Curator of Exhibitions, and collections on exhibition-related material, ensuring accuracy of information and that all deadlines are met
      • Coordinate production and image permissions for all exhibition-related publications and catalogues: work with designers, copy-editors, Fralin staff, and copyright holders to ensure deadlines for publications are met.
      • Manage author and outside vendor contracts for publications and guest curator contracts
      • Coordinate obtaining high resolution images, image permissions and copyright for exhibition-related publications. Work with Collections and Marketing departments to ensure image reproduction standards are met.
      • Assist Curator in providing information about exhibitions and the collection to other departments within the Museum and the University
      • Assist with the production of Museum announcements
  • Responsibility 5.1: Manage department interns, Level of Importance: High, 10%
    • Duties:
      • Develop internship curriculum in consultation with the Curator of Exhibitions and the department
      • Organize and supervise daily intern activities
  • Responsibility 6.1: Assist Curator and exhibitions department with research for exhibitions and collections, Level of Importance: High, 10%
    • Duties:
      • Assist curator with research for both exhibitions and collections including but not limited to provenance, artist biography, and object research.

Skills Required

Bachelor’s degree and up to 4 years of experience is required.

Highly Preferred:

  • InDesign
  • Art handling/prior museum or gallery experience
  • Strong sense of organization and prioritization
