Culinary Activities Leader (2 weeks)

Mountaintop Montessori, a private independent school, is currently seeking a qualified candidate to fill a 2-week, part-time position in our SMASH summer camp.

About Our SMASH Camp:

Campers (rising 1st-6th grade) will choose their flow between music, fiber arts, and culinary arts for a personalized daily adventure. Become a chef and make delicious new recipes. Dye your own yarn and learn how to felt a colorful piece of artwork to wear or to brighten up your bedroom! Move and groove to fun sounds in an interactive music lesson while exploring the best-loved compositions of all time. This is the perfect camp for trying lots of new skills at once!

About the Position:

SMASH Camp is held Monday-Friday, June 18- June 29. This position would arrive at 8:00 AM and complete the day at 1:00 PM. The selected candidate is expected to commit to the full 2-week session, including the following training dates: May 31st and June 2nd. Each day the campers will rotate between the three camp Leaders, and the group that selects to work with the Culinary Activities Leader will spend their time in the kitchen, exploring new foods, trying out recipes, and tasting their results.

Pay: $17.00/hr

The Culinary Activities Leader is responsible for (but not limited to) the following duties:

– Leading the facilitation of daily cooking activities with various ages of campers

– Developing sound relationships with all campers

– Ensuring group transitions happen safely and effectively

– Maintaining appropriate camper-to-staff ratios at all times

– Assisting the campers in maintaining a clean environment

– Monitoring of the playground and meal times to ensure safety

– Must follow all Mountaintop Montessori policies and procedures, as well as all Virginia Department of Social Services licensing standards

Qualifications:

– As a condition of employment, a criminal background check and fingerprinting are required.
– Must have the ability to manage camper safety while campers use kitchen appliances and utensils.
– A desire to teach children how to cook in a nut-free camp setting.
– Experience preparing diverse kinds of cuisine.
– Strong classroom management skills.
– Experience working with children.
– Must have regular, reliable, predictable attendance in performance of essential job functions.
– Ability to work effectively with parents, co-workers, and diverse communities.
– Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, initiative, creativity, and flexibility, including the ability to evaluate and make changes as necessary to ensure a successful program experience.
– First Aid/CPR certification is preferred but will train on June 2nd if not already trained.
