Are you looking to utilize your advanced accounting skills and experience to support a cause that makes a daily difference within your own community? The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is seeking a self-directed and experienced Controller to oversee all financial, accounting, tax and inventory system activities.

Background

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is a respected, regional nonprofit providing nourishing food and hope to neighbors. Founded in 1981, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and eight cities in central and western Virginia, from Loudoun and Winchester in the north to the Lexington and Lynchburg areas in the south. We provide food to nearly 128,000 visitors each month through a partner network of more than 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters, as well as through nutrition programs for children, seniors, and rural neighbors. Total revenues of approximately $65 million and an operating budget of $17 million support the work of more than 70 employees in four locations, including our headquarters and main distribution center in Verona.

Key responsibilities include:

The Controller is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of accounting operations and the monitoring of a $17.4 million operations budget, providing the CFO and budget managers with financial data necessary for operational decision-making. Responsibilities will include leading the monthly financial close process, producing financial statements and reports, and maintaining custody for and accuracy of the Food Bank’s ERP system, Ceres. The Controller ensures financial information is timely, accurate, and compliant with relevant accounting principles and best practices.

Skills Required

Required job qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration with an emphasis in accounting
• Minimum five years of accounting/financial experience as an accounting lead, supervisor, or manager handling month-end closings. Nonprofit
experience preferred.
• Strong computer skills; experience in accounting software such as Blackbaud and Microsoft Office Suite; database or other system knowledge; MS
Navision experience is a plus
• Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial transactions, payroll, inventory and internal control principles
• Advanced knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting best practices, relevant laws, standards, and state/national regulations
• Analytical ability to develop and implement system improvements
• Ability to analyze financial data, develop reports and recommend actions
• Professional written and verbal communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with senior executives and colleagues, as well as mentor/lead other team members
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) license is preferred, but not required.

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is a full-time role with competitive salary and benefits working in a healthy, collaborative, and collegial culture based on-site at our headquarters in Verona, VA. This role may require occasional work evenings or weekends based on the needs of the Food Bank. Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
