Community Organizer Overview

The PHAR Community Organizer’s primary responsibilities are to support resident leadership, coordinate the day-to-day operations of community organizing, and to implement and win PHAR organizing campaigns to improve the lives of public housing residents. This position may also include coordination of the PHAR Internship Program, a civic participation program. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. It is a full-time salary position. This position requires frequent evening meetings and occasional weekend work.

Job Duties

Community Organizer Position Overview

The Community Organizer is responsible for planning and implementing community education and organizing efforts, including (but not limited to) the following:

  1. Flyer, doorknock and conduct surveys to ensure residents gain knowledge and access to opportunities to participate
  2. Develop relationships with residents, community supporters and decision makers
  3. Maintain and expand resident database
  4. Develop the leadership skills and civic participation of public housing residents
  5. Support the Internship Program, a six-month, 10 hours/week hands-on program of learning and civic engagement
  6. Help individual residents solve their housing challenges
  7. Participate in meetings with residents, City and Housing Authority officials, coalitions, etc.
  8. Other duties as requested

Skills Required

Qualifications:

  • Great verbal communication and listening skills,
  • Knowledge of Charlottesville’s low-income housing,
  • Commitment to leadership development and community organizing focused on improving the lives of low-income people,
  • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities with a positive attitude and
  • Passion, idealism, integrity and sense of humor.

Work Schedule

It is a full-time salary position. This position requires frequent evening meetings and occasional weekend work.
