Community Organizer Overview

The PHAR Community Organizer’s primary responsibilities are to support resident leadership, coordinate the day-to-day operations of community organizing, and to implement and win PHAR organizing campaigns to improve the lives of public housing residents. This position will also include support for the PHAR Internship Program, PHAR’s civic participation and leadership development program. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. It is a full-time salary position. This position requires frequent evening meetings and occasional weekend work.

Responsibilities:

The Community Organizer is responsible for planning and implementing community education and organizing efforts, including (but not limited to) the following:
-Flyer, doorknock and conduct surveys to ensure residents gain knowledge and access to opportunities to participate,
-Develop relationships with residents, community supporters and decision makers,
-Encourage the leadership skills and civic participation of public housing residents,
-Assist the Internship Coordinator to support PHAR’s six-month, 10 hours/week hands-on program of learning and civic engagement,
-Help individual residents solve their housing challenges,
-Participate in meetings with residents, City and Housing Authority officials, coalitions, etc., and
-Other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

-Passion for Social Justice: Demonstrated commitment to empowering marginalized communities and working towards social equity.
-Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Ability to build trust, establish rapport, and communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
-Experience in Community Organizing: Previous experience working with grassroots organizations, community groups, or social justice initiatives is preferred.
-Excellent Organizational and Time Management Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
-Flexibility and Adaptability: Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed to accommodate community events and meetings.
-Knowledge of Charlottesville’s low-income housing preferred
